here begins a rant

i know of 3 people now who have been to court and convicted of crimes and as part of their probation they have been offered either a free training and work programe, one of them starts an aprenticeship doing plumbing next week no doubt subsidised by the government!

it's like at school when the really bad trouble makers would get a trip out somewhere for the day for being well behaved for a week while the rest of us were stuck doing maths!

i get they do it so these people get a job, lead a normal life and don't re-offend but when there's so many decent hard working men and women out there who can't find work it just doesn't seem fair!

wasnt going to mention it but i will, one of the 3 i mentioned is a lad who stole my car! he got a ban driving even though he was already banned after stealing his mothers car countless times, i thought he would of at least been ordered to pay me something for my losses, but he wasn't, yet a friend of mine got accused of hitting his girlfriend and he was ordered to pay here £300 in compensation.

wonder if it's too late to appeal against his sentance, or if that can even be done

RANT OVER

That really does take the ****. I presume all three of these people have the correct number of chromosomes and have no real reason why they don't know right from wrong.
They should be severely punished. If that doesn't work, they should be even more severely punished. If that doesn't work....... etc etc.
I cannot understand the concept of rewarding bad behaviour and penalising "normal" folk in the process.

Political Correctness gone mad - no one high up dares do anything else incase of criticism.

would you prefer them to continue being criminals for the rest of their lives, or get qualified in a job and contribute to society instead?

i'd prefer they were punished properly for what they'd done, if they were punished properly they'd be less likely to re-offend, do you really think a job is going to stop scum bags re-offending?

my life's ambition is on track for the end of this year, living abroad in the sun, can't wait.

to them getting made to work is a punishment, prison is just a 2nd home to them

depends what type of criminal your on about, some of the lads i know don't want to go to prison, they've never been most of them.

i'm on about the small time scum bags, burglers, car theives and stuff who instead of going to jail for a decent amount of time, they get a slap on the wrist and an oppertunity i know a lot of my friends would jump at!

i must stress though, none of these people are my friends, i just know them and have them on facebook etc.

This is a two-pronged thing. Yeah it's good they will get off the streets, have skills, be earning and hopefully stop stealing. But whats to stop him disappearing off the radar with all the tools he will undoubtedly be given and selling them to some smack head, and continue the same routine.

I think its a good idea. A lot of people committing crime dont have any qualifications, this will help them get some, and hopefully a job at the end of it.

but if the punishment matched the crime in the first place i doubt we'd have as much people in that predicement.

they get oppertunities law obiding folk just don't seem to get, we just blend in.

Chain gangs ftw!!! Prison to keep them off the streets, and hard labour, just cos they hate it :D
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!! He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.
He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them.....this is a good one......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. You have to love this guy!!
More on the AZ Sheriff:
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports:
About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to
their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is
not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and
they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes... so shut your damned mouths."

Damn Straight Sheriff Joe!!
