Hello, just recently brought a fiat bravo 1.8 hlx 1997 p reg. Theres a knocking noise when going around corners and roundabouts and its coming from the left side, passengers side. When you go slow without accelerating to much round corners its fine. I just took it to ebely tyre place, they said its the steering rack, but it was on the drivers side they was turning the wheel outwards by hand and its fine then they was turning it inwards towards the car and it was very hard, they had to push hard toturn it, so they said you will be looking at 300 quid to get it fixed, STUFF IT UP YOUR ARSES. A question for all of you, could it be the bearing or cvs or something else. I really cant make it out that if it is the steering rack how could it make the knocking noise. Ebely might be right they are the proffesionals or money grabbers. Thanks for looking

sounds like the c.v joint to me, can you feel it on the steering yet? get to the breakers shouldnt cost more than 30 quid

Hi, I have a marea JTD but same applies to all these beds of cars. same subframes etc.
The nearside of the car gets the worst wear coz of roundabouts and inner wear is worst. Most likely cause is the CV joint and gaiter. Jack it up and see if any grease or tears are apparent on the shaft. rotate the wheels and look for noise and wear. If so you need to replace MOT fail!

if the knocking is ont dependant on road surface and the frequency is related to road speed then i would say its definatley the outer CV joint on the passenger side.

if it is not related to road speed (more speed = faster knocking) it cant be the CV joint.
if it happens when going straight it is very unlikely to be the cv joint.
if it only happens over rough surfaces it wont be the cv joint (it will be wishbone).

if the garage found it difficult to move your rack via a road wheel it does suggest your rack has a problem. if you cant feel the difference going left and right from the steering wheel i wouldnt worry about it, but it may fail its next MOT if the tester notices.

hello, thanks for your replys. i should be taking my car to my dads on saturday because i can work better there then on a main road. in a straight line its perfect its when you turn left and accelerating you hear the knocking noise, but when you dont accelrate that much theres no noise. The knocking noise is very loud. the steering is fine it doesnt feel like thres a problem. When i jack the car up can i spin the passenger side wheel to see if it knocks. Thanks

that does sound exactly like CV joint. spinning the wheel when not under load (jacked up) wont usually show any knocking. you can wiggle the driveshaft in and out to see if there is any play in the CV joint.

update, jacked the car up spined the wheel no knocking noise because theres no wait on it. it all looks prety good under there. is the cv joint connecting to the wheel with the black hover ruuber pipe thingy. Thanks

I am having a similar problem with my Bravo (left side wheel). It does not make any noise until I hit a bump then after a while it get worse and worse. I have been told it could be a Bush that has gone however, this only started when I took it in to get an oil leak fixed. Somehow, they have managed to damage something in the suspension, my exhaust is now sounding as if it’s blowing slightly and its new, also its still leaking oil. £140 and my car worse that when I started.................. can anyone shine light on this or is it the same problem as above,

Thanks

had it sorted now it was the swing are i think(if thats got the ball joint on) it cost £80 including labour...hope that will help you

thinks that the wish bone.

I have delovped and squeaking. I had my front brakes done and everytime i turn right (right only) my passenager side squeaks like hell but not on the drivers side.

He put copper grease on and everything.

Any ideas.

in that case the copper grease has not been applied in the correct palces or the caliper is sticking (not the piston, i mean the caliper, usually it has 2 sliding pins, grease them)

could it be the shocks? i had a similar thing on my brava, it was the drivers side but thats what the knockin was. i could feel it thru the pedals and hear it if i had no music on. just a thought
