Lastnight my trusty N reg brava 1.4 bit the dust. It lurched, then I lost all link to the engine. Now when I try to start it there is just a high pitched sort of noise. The recovery agent told me that I'd broken a cam belt, but he was able to drive the car a metre or so, and so thought it might possibly be the Crank Shaft sensor instead (would the car move at all if it were the belt?)

Does anyone know how much its going to cost me to get a new crank shaft sensor, and to get it fitted? If anyone has any further suggestions as to the problem I'd be keen. Also, knowing the cost, is it worth it (I've been quoted £1000 for the work at one garage-which my father tells me is worth it, because I'd then have a rebuilt engine, and be worry free for a few more years-as opposed to getting a banger for the same price).

Thanks in advance

the guy basically ****ed ur valves proper by driving it. sell the car and buy a new one you can get a decent one for like 800 these days get a differant engine also as the 1.4 isnt the most famed for its fuel comsumption or it reliablility.

instead of 1000 rebuild pay 800 for a differant car and then get a good service and belt change with the extra 200 you have

also bravos are nicer ;):)

Where are you looking for decent cars of that price range? I'm not an expert at all. Autotrader seemed to turn up not much at all, short of 2 litre monsters, and Rover Metro models...
