I know this sounds daft, but the tape deck cover will not open when I press the eject button. Is this a common problem, or is it a weird Fiat trait where eject means something different?
I have noticed this problem with tapes where it says 'eject' but then there's a failure. Luckily I hook the radio up to my mp3 player via one of those tape converter things, leaving a handy wire hanging out with which I can physically pull the tape out of the unit

mine had the same symptoms, which i cured by breaking it!! under the top of the flap at the middle is a little hook, this is what releases the flap, if you can hold the eject lever to the right you may be able to use something thin, like a paperclip to release the hook and therefore the flap, if you pull this clip far enough to the right the tape should eject aswell.
If it's just the cover that's stuck, press the cover eject button with one finger and use another to push the cover IN and release the cover. It usually works with mine.
Happened to me when i first bought my car, the previous owner or blokie at the garage left a tape inside, when i tried to get it out, it jammed, in the end I managed to jimmy it free with a flathead screwdriver, needless to say, the next day i got rid of the stereo and replaced it with a CD tuner!
