Hi everyone. I recently bought a 2000 Brava 1.9 JTD (105) with 90k on the clock. The clutch was dodgy, but driveable, so I took it in to the local garage this morning.

They have phoned back quoting over £1100 to replace the clutch and flywheel (which is part of the clutch kit), saying there is about 8 hours' labour and £450 in parts.

Is this reasonable? It sounds totally insane to me and is considerably more than the car cost...

Any advice would be most welcome, as otherwise we may have to scrap the thing, leaving us massively out of pocket and without transport...

Thanks in advance...

Jim

 The joys of diesels with Dual Mass Flywheels.... shop around I suggest.

Yeah, I'd say 950-1000. £1100 is OTT.

Flywheel may not need replacing, all depends on the amount of abuse the flywheel has taken over it's life.

1 question - why would you scrap it? Cars have servicing and repair costs. Scrap the car and you will need to get another, which may need it's clutch fixing soon after purchase.

8hours labour at an average of £30 = £240. 3 Piece Clutch Kit is approx £120 for a Valeo. Fly wheel is around £400 for a genuine one but you can find it cheaper.

Overall it should cost you no more than £760. The clutch kit does not come with the flywheel, its a seperate part which typically doesn't suffer any problems so either they're trying to make a few quid from you or it really has gone. Typically a constant judder when accelerating would mean flywheel has warped. If the flywheel has cracked thats a different story.

When i had the clutch changed on my JTD i paid £360 inc VAT. No flywheel change. The job is an 8 hour job as its requires alot of work to remove the old clutch.

Ring around for a better quote, £1100 is daylight robbery.

Would love to know where you get £30 an hour. My local dealer wants £90 an hour just to do a few things on Examiner.

Dave.

Who mentioned the stealer? There are other garages that will carry out the work. Most garages near me vary between £25-£35 an hour. The local stealer also charges £90 an hour near me. Thats why i carry out all my own work unless the job requires ramps then i take it to a garage. In regards to paying £90 for a diagnostic using the examiner, I use my own examiner at home, FOC.

You'll love your car when you change the clutch and the flywheel. I did it last summer for 750 euro here in Bulgaria. Clutch and flywheel by Valeo, the clutch pump on the gearbox was leaking so I replaced it with new one by AP, new brake fluid. The labor was only 75 euro (included in the total price of 750). It took them 6 hours to change all this. The whole front suspension was removed plus the exhaust pipes. I was going to cry when they told my my flywheel needs to be replaced. I suffer 4 hours until they reassemble my car and believe me when I did the test drive.. this was not my car! It sooo cool to drive it now - no more judder at all!

Here are some nice pics below:

the flywheel and labour is a big cost factor in this job, one thing you could investigate is using a solid TD100 flywheel instead, if you can get a good one from a breakers. takes a long time to do as well as lots of stuff has to be removed to get the box out.. a new flywheel will make it feel like a new car though..

well it's simple fit a non dual mass fly wheel there a waste of space anyway maybe the free engined petrol fly wheel would fit being same gearbox same engine block so everything should be the same deapth

the mounting holes on fly wheel shoud be the same

only diference maybe the starter motor pinion number of theeth are diferent maybe someone that knows could shed some light on this posability

and it takes 4 hours tops to do the job not 8 maybe 8 is the book time and again they are taking you for a ride i'd really shop around

to be perfectly hionest 8 is closer to a coupe 20vt but even those could be done in less there not so bad on the gearbox end it sits in relatively the same place on the same mount i think just the engine is thurther over
