My car has got really bad squeaking brakes they only make a noise when i press the break very slightly and when you break heavy they don’t make a noise at all. How do you get rid of it as its starting to get annoying!
Thanks

Dude, how old and how many miles are on it ? Mine used to squeal a bit but plenty of hard use (gentle pressure glazes pads) and a few miles should sort it. If the car's under warranty, take it back.

Easily the most irritating GP issue I have. It's been in and out of the dealership four times as of today to try and sort this problem out. So far, I've had new discs, pads and calipers fitted twice on all four wheels, I've had some sort of glaze applied which was left to 'soak' for a good 36 hours before the car was even moved again and today they claimed to have fitted some kind of rubber plug to dissipate the vibrations that cause the squeak.

Within 2 miles of driving home, the brakes were squeaking like mad. It's a total pain in the butt and I feel embarrassed every time I pull up at traffic lights as pedestrians look around to see who is abusing a small creature in public. The reticent part of me is trying to come to terms with the fact that the brakes will probably always squeak and the dashboard vent will pop up every 3 months (on my third one now) and the skydome will always judder, but the Italian part of me just wants to give the dealership hell until they sort it all for good.

As far as I am aware (and I have been informed of this by two dealerships at separate areas of the country; one was Vospers Fiat in Exeter, the other was Arnold Clarke Fiat of Stourbridge) any such problems which Fiat know of are covered within the full three year manufacturer's warranty period, provided of course such issues are not caused by general wear and tear or by plain old neglect/crap driving/track usage/etc - which is fair.

it depends on mileage (within life of pads) however the squeaky brake saga has long gone therefore either crap pads (or old squeaky stock) have been fitted or they not been fitted right. Jetwash the front pads to see if that helps by getting rid of dust.

Out of curiosity do you ever keep your foot on the brake whilst at the lights or always use the handbrake?

I always keep my foot on the break. (y)

Its a brake... a break is what you have between work sessions...

Anyhow, whats the squeeky brake drama? Just change the pads for some thing recomended on here (was it Greenstuff?) I cant recall at the mo. Make sure the calipers are clean and free from rust or pad material build up and apply a smear of copper based grease to all moving parts (NOT the pad faces or discs!)

Considering alex has had new discs, pads and calipers twice and is still having problems I would say it's either a design fault or something you're doing to them. My mate has a GP Sporting and had to replace his discs and pads as he warped them due to keeping his foot on the brake all the time when stopped. It would also explain why they are squealing during light braking but not under hard.

Did the garage mention any break-in procedure for your new brakes at all? I would go very easy for the first say 250 miles as a precaution, and don't keep your foot on them!

Cheers, Dan
