Hello,

Can anyone tell me what is causing this break squeak noise please? It happens when I release the handbrake and also now when the brake pedal has been pressed and slowly on its way back up. To me it sounds like it's coming from the front of the car, but can't be sure.

Thank you.

Is it allowing the car to roll once the handbrake is released that makes the noise? Or is it the action of releasing the handbrake that makes the noise even if the car is stationary?

Bit of both, Makes the noise when the car is stationary but when releases the handbrake.

So it doesn’t need to roll at all to make the noise. The only thing that the foot brake and the handbrake have in common is actuating the rear caliper piston. In which case the noise must be from the rear calipers I’d imagine.

Maybe get someone else to do the actuating whilst you have a better listen at positions around the car. And maybe get it away from the kerb into an open area so the kerb doesn’t influence sound direction perception.

Hi Adam,

How is engine now ?

An road works or tarmacking going on, on your route ?

Gravel and chippings can lodge anywhere, even amongst the brakes.

Your car has disk rear brakes ?

Over...

Car is still hesitant in the lower gears, and now smell of petrol from exhaust and front bonnet area.

No my car has rear brake drums and shoes.

Sometimes, particularly after no servicing, the pads on the brake back plate, that *present* the brake shoes 'squarly' to the drum rubbing surface, corrode due to lack of the mere lick of lubricant needed, and squeek.

Picture tommorrow to show what I mean as both Punto brake back plates off the car and axle.

Using either brake, foot or hand, can cause this squeek, as can brakes in need of adjustment ( larger travel ).

If would be an idea, as had been suggested, for an assistant to operate brakes, under your command, so you can walk around car and listen, to help pin point noise location.

How is handbrake, v good or poorish ?

Brake shoes are a service item and the only sure way to check the condition is to remove the brake drums. If you don't know when they were last checked and assuming the car has done 60,000+ miles ? Maybe time to get them looked at.

There is a small *sight hole* on the drums front face where brake shoe lining thickness can he seen, but it is better to remove drum for a better view. Auto adjusters will "jam" and refuse to work, due to brake dust.

@Adam1984 The only squeak I can hear in that video is the sound of the pedal pivot as the pedal comes up. (Assuming you are pressing and releasing the pedal)

OR, the sound of the handbrake lever pivot if you are releasing and lowering the lever. Neither of these are anything at all to worry about.

You say it dos it with the car staying still, so it is very unlikely to be an issue with brake parts. And the brakes were in good fettle at the last MOT. The rear brakes on a Panda take yonks to wear...

You had better never own a LandRover like mine-- every moving part, and several that don't move - squeak like this all the time :)

Just as a matter of interes @Adam1984 ... is this the same noise you asked about almost exactly a year (April 30 2025) and 8000 miles ago, here: https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/squeak-sound.516758/#post-4812062?

If so, there is clearly nothing to worry about as you've been happy with it for the 12 months in between. The moving parts of brake systems (on all vehicles) do tend to squeak like this, especially after a lot of dry weather. It is all perfectly normal and absolutely nothing to be concerned by. (Unless of course the brakes aren't working -- but you know they are)

I can read and write just like you.

If Anthony gives accurate answers to some s arching questions, the noise can he borrowed down, hopefully to the correct cause.

Either brakes applied, and released, causes brake components to move.

This movement can result in a squeek.

The rear brake shoes move on the back plate pads I have mentioned. Metal to metal contact. Add some corrosion for good measure. Excessive shoe movement due to out of adjustment brakes can cause a squeek. Squeek heard on lads Punto pre mot along with poor handbrake meant tlc needed.

Brake service and adjustment along with a mere lick of lub on the back plate pads resulted in an extremely good handbrake, just like over 5 years ago.

Just get chores done before she gets back from town.

Yes I had a rear brake clean up regarding this last year and the issue stopped up until about a month ago. They clean and adjusted the rear brakes.

Surely this doesn't need to be done every year.

Will try and test the sound again a little bit later on.
