Hope somebody can help.

Recently had my 2002 Punto serviced at 20k and all ok apart from told that the front brake pads need replacing within 1000 miles as very worn.
I told them not to replace them as was going to cost £90.00 with labour and have just inspected them myself.
There is about 5mm on all of the pads which seems to me no where near worn out.
Does anybody know the minimum thickness as I want to confront the garage over the 1000 mile claim as it seems to be a bit of a con to me.

Opinions or advice would be much appreciated.

I paid about 40-45£ something to change my font brakepads at Fiat. Both parts and labour. Changed them when there was starting to sound metal scrape, but you should change them earlier, could damage the discs else.

5mm should last you a while before they need replacing. The pads are only 10 - 12mm thick when new so 5mm is a fair amount of material. I only replace pads when there's about 2mm left. DON'T wait until there's metal-on-metal contact!

Well it was nice of them to tell you at the 20000 mile service. Mine went in and nothing was said, then about two days after a nasty metal scraping noise was heard by me  They were probably trying to get me to wreck my discs so I had to get new ones lol

Wolfrace: you should've had them for that; I'll bet a pint that on the service sheet the "brake pad thickness" check box was ticked!

My discs are scored, rusty and generally crap, but if I get new discs I'll also have to replace my barely-worn £50 EBC pads that I fitted last year :(

...although the full kit of EBC's drilled/grooved discs and Greenstuff pads is tempting!

Yep, you're right it was........but if I did make a fuss about it, they would have made a fuss about my mods voiding the warranty, next time I need something done ;)

Thanks for the welcome and such a quick response, I guess there isn't any great rush to change them and as its still under warranty shouldn't be doing it myself but resent paying somebody £60.00 labour for a job that will take me just a few minutes to do myself.
I will probably use the genuine pads this time, anybody know of an online supplier of genuine parts?

I'm trying to sort out some Black Diamond pads and drilled discs right now. Problem is that BD suggest that there are two pads depending on the caliper manufacturer.

Typical.

www.fastfiat.com are listing only one option for the 1.2 8v and having spoken to them it looks like they've got the correct ones.

We shall see, Fiat were going to charge £200+ for new pads and discs fitted. The Black Diamond set is around £120 and I can fit them myself. If it ever stops raining up in Scotland.......

pads can be a pain in the ass like this sometimes, obviously they would of lasted longer than 1000 miles but would they of lasted till your next service? If they had failed before your next service without the garage reporting that they were worn who would of been liable if you had been in a acident because of said pads?

i can't believe the pikey'ness of not replacing brake pads.

are you lot completely bonkers the only thing stopping you from hitting the car infront or the little child running across the road is the brakes.

never skrimp replace early

i'm sure when ur having facial reconstructive surgery you'll really appreciate the extra £90 in your back pocket.

btw green stuff pads will wear through faster than your face on the tarmac at 40mph

buy red dot they are inexpensive and last longer with no sacrifice on quality or stopping power

Have used Red Dot before and found them to be very good on price and performance.

Wanted to give Black Diamond a go as I've heard equally good things there.

Either way, if they need doing, do them. Never mind "I'll get another month out of these".

If the pad gets too thin, you won't be stopping. I don't want to see any less users on this forum so before worrying about which sideskirts to fit, make sure the car is in good order!!!

RANT OVER!

:D

Mr coates if you have used red dot i would stick to them i have been in cars with other set up s and found them lacking.

also i can get wicked prices for the red dot gear althought they do fluctuate a little usually down so let me know if you want some via pm
