rain-x is a rain repellent for glass. If you were to look at glass under a microscope you would see that the surface is not completely smooth and this is what causes the water to hold onto the glass, what rain-x does is fill the bumps in and make the glass smoother and therefore gives the water less to cling to, so it runs off. Its bit like when after you polish your car the water beads up and runs off as it can't cling to the metal work. Its most impressive when your driving on the motorway or dual carriage ways at speed as you can almost get away with not using your wipers at all, hence why I told Jamie to drive at 50+ everywhere.
