Maybe the issue could be related to a faulty boot lock actuator, a damaged latch mechanism, a problem with the electrical system, debris stuck in the lock, or even a broken boot release button. Is there any part of the boot lid compromised or been perhaps been ‘pushed’ whilst being parked somewhere ? Even the lightest of dings whilst not visibly obvious other vehicles can still bend panels depending on their height eg: a Range Rover vs a 500, a good difference in heights on the road. A big ol bumper like that could certainly do some damage without the owner being really aware of it happening whilst trying to squeeze their tank behind you. Just an idea anyway. That scenario certainly happened to me before in one of my old cars.
