Ouch! That sounds painful. I hope you haven't told your dealer you treat your engine like that

Remind me never to buy a car from you ;)

You should try the first junction on my drive to work. I'd rather accidentally hit a limiter once than wait 15 mins for my engine to warm up. I now change gear mid manouver but was a nasty shock when it happened.

Don't judge

Using full revs in an accident avoiding situation is fair enough (if that's what you mean) but you made it sound like you do it routinely.

The car is limited when cold - so that you treat it with respect. Until it gets warm - then all hell lets loose......:worship:Fiat Corse

A few points on the engine performance:

This engine in the Sporting variant is faster than the Abarth (appologies to Abarth owners if the truth hurts):

The rev limiter or governor is there to obviously stop you over reving the engine. There is absolutely no problem with running the engine to the limiter so long as its hot. :)

If you run the engine at high RPM when its cold your asking for trouble :bang:i.e. in later life - not good for the engine or the turbo.

The torque curve for this engine is absolutely brilliant - Core Sportivo (y). You dont have to stop at "half revs" to get the best from the engine. Typically on a diesel the torque band (curv) is limited to around 1500 - 2300 rpm hence having to change gear on overtakes (motorbike term). This engines torque curve starts at 1900 rpm and goes up to 4000 rpm and its practically linear. So acceleration is there for a long time (well its really short if your using the torque correctly). :p

Torque gets you down the road not BHP. This is what the petrol heads fail to realise, with comments of good fuel economy but poor performance. So the reality is more torque the faster you can go. Add this to a long torque curve and bingo - Economy and performance, win win.

In summary the 1,9 JTDm and the 2.4 JTDm are world class diesel performance engines. The next generation engines are on their way - so look out.

When starting the car up i'm now getting a huge "bang" type noise. Not an explosion but the whole car shakes and it sounds like somone has just thrown a big rock on the roof. Was accompanied by more smoke than usual today! :(

Have informed my dealer and they said they will get back to me regarding any service bulletins about the car etc.

Ananku - would it be possible to have a definitive list of all the things that have been changed/checked on your car, and a contact number for TJ Vickers service department, and anyone you may have spoken to at fiat uk?

Any updates from anyone? sussexa?

Cheers

nothing new from me im afraid, havnt heard back about the battery yet they said it might not get seen until friday. the smoking was just added on at the end of the service sheet to check amount of smoke when started up as would have stood for a day or more, but this is the first time ive mentioned it to them so not holding my breath that they will even look at that.once batterys sorted i can leave it with them another time.

Only thing i would say is that if fiat uk are sending a techinician out to Ananku then there must be some concern from then?

Also the work my dealer did that was supposed to cure a smokey start up did nothing....

Would rather take full benefit of the warranty while I can.

stuck in work so cant pick mine up till sat morn now but over phone flat battery is a problem with aftermarket alarm setting off radiator fan?alarm was meta fitted at suppling dealer so ive got to take it there to get that looked at, is there an easy way to disconnect alarm and still use key fob to lock doors?.as for smoke they recommended a new air filter and a fuel treatment and possibly fuel filter(cant remmember now) before they would investigate further.when i asked which fuel treatment as most manufacturers wont recommend one she said id have to speak to the tech on monday.dealers really are stars.

Replacement parts on my car to try and cure the problem (without success):-
ECG valve, coolant sensor, MAF meter.
Also - Calibrated injectors and full analysiser measurements sent for review to Fiat Technical.
Also the Dealer put a Forecourt sale car on the analysiser for comparison (both cars were the same).

My dealer confirmed yesterday that following a review of all the data that they sent to the Technical Support Team, they (Fiat) have stated that my car is running correctly and that there was nothing wrong with it. :ROFLMAO: So as far as my Dealer is concerned thats it. :bang: In principle I agree with their statement, as I know that when the engine has started its all ok - it just at start up.

I have therefore telephoned Fiat themselves, spoken with the Customer Services Dept (very pleasant Italian Lady), and made a complaint against Fiat (not my Dealer). Fiat have said that a case manager will contact me within 3 days to discuss and that they have marked it urgent. I have also telephoned my Dealer and let them know of the situation.

Fiat's number is 0080034280000 select option 3 from the automated message (dont leave it to late to select as the message is repeated in Italian):yuck:. Make your complaint if you feel your Dealer cannot do anymore.

I will report more when I have taken the call. Off now for some beers. :yum:
Ciao. (y)

most info that ive found or been advised for blue smoke on start up always seems to be valve guide stem seals if they have held their hands up and can do no more did they check these at all ?not sure how they would other than rocker cover off and visually check.also is there any way to take injectors out and check they seal 100% shut, over 12-24 hours the smallest dribble will add up.could a small amount of diesel be artificially added to one cylinder to see if that recreates the blue smoke and then small amount of oil same thing this would give us a 50-50 oil or fuel unless they both smoke the same.whats easiest thing to remove for access to cylinder guessing glow plug ?but as car not with me now could be completely wrong.

If you really want to see some smoke then it's a hell of a lot easier then that.

Just do lots of false starts. Turn over the engine but try not to let it start.

That should create plenty of smoke (briefly) but to be honest I really can't see the point.

If it runs fine without using any oil then what's the problem

i cant see a manufacturer selling many cars if whenever someone went for a test drive a cloud of blue smoke the size of a car came out the back and drifted slowly away from the car or back towards the front of the car if winds that way , and the salesman says " ah thats nothing to worry about " if nothing else its embarrasing but also cant be doing any good to the inlet manifold, egr, and cat.if somethings wrong in warranty is when its best getting sorted.how much should i expect to pay for a fuel filter from dealers and how hard is it to change, any procedure to prime it?

I grant you yours puts out a fair bit more smoke than my JTD but I'm not sure I'd call it a massive amount. At least yours sounds quite healthy (compared to adruss85's motor :()

As you say, worth checking out under warranty I guess.

ok got car back, job sheet did insist on new air filter fuel filter and fuel cleaner/additive.checked at parts desk fuel filter 77363657 is £55 +vat so diddnt get that today will shop around, additive that they use and sell is silver hook diesel treatment and injector cleaner so bought a bottle and added to tank this morning and filled up with tank of excellium.

near end of 2nd full tank of fuel since adding the bottle of injector cleaner, first tank noticed no difference to smoke from normal.added millers sport4 to sainsburys diesel this tank and have noticed that this week only smoke is all but gone, both going to work mid day and leaving work 22.00hrs?convinced this is related to weather as this weeks been really hot and mpg is also up 350 miles with 1/4 tank left.(showing 53mpg)
any updates from ananku or adruss?

did you add the bottle to a full tank, I thought those products were normally added to 30 or so litres of fuel?
If it was a whole tank, maybe you watered it down too much??
