Any ideas... Had to replace the Cat again (Brava 1600, 16v 1998), fourth year in a row...Not burning oil or loosing water, ticks over correctly. Exhaust does smell a little fuely, if you know what i mean? and she is down on power. Could it be valves no closing properly???

Cheap CAT??? When was you last service, ie cambelt ect has it been timed forward a tooth??

4 in a year is rather unlucky well very unlucky!!!

Cat was replaced at the last MOT, was charged £80 for it, not sure if thats cheap or not?? yes, had the timeing checked week later, spot on. Brand new cam belt 8000 miles ago. Also had new head gasket and injectors; one failed so had Fiat fit four new ones. Im thinking valves now, would a compression test give any clues??

there's something wrong if it keeps burning them out.. have you checked the emissions and is the lambda sensor working correctly ? Any over fuelling will eventually destroy a cat. so make sure everything is working properly and there are no air leaks etc at the manifold before replacing it again.
also, some aftermarket cats tend to be ****e anyway, better off getting a good quality replacement or a good used OEM one..
