Panda (Classic) Black Panda Wanda 1000CL Formula 91

Introduction

Hi All,

After over 2 year on this forum I've finally decided to set members motors thread for my Panda as I'm currently doing some body works.
Some of them may have some benefits to other forum users, and it will be a bit easier for me to ask an advice.

As some of you know as seen my Panda personally it is not bad example, but as most of them she is not perfect.

On the last MOT test this June I've been told by the tester that there is small rust hole at the inner sill/ floor recognized as an advisory.
So, lets have a closer look....

At that time I was aware of small (20mm) outer sill bottom edge flange missing, but I was wrong as that was not the only one rust point.

Thats how it looked like, the hole was enlarge by only using my fingers - yellow marking is still visible. After having a play with screwdriver and angle grinder - situation seams to be under control.

No, it's not.
As you can see there is a right mess under the jacking point, and the far end of jacking point itself is badly corroded same as the cross membrane.

And the jacking point
IMG_17821.JPG

The following plan for is :
- cut the and of the membrane, to gain clear access to the floor and inner sill,
- repair floor and inner sill section under the membrane,
- weld in the rest of the floor and inner sill cut out,
- fabricate cross membrane section and weld it back in to original position,
- repair jacking point using 3mm thick steel,
- spot weld jacking point back to ori position,
- prepare surrounding area for stone chip paint, closed profile conservation, etc...

Now I'm after some 1.5mm steel sheet for the membrane rebuild, and 1-1.2mm for floor/sill.

Any suggestions, tips&trics are welcome.
Couple photos of the front sill corner job. I did not done my best as full outer sill replacement part would be required. Next time it is a must as rear sill end requires some attention.

I do recomend Cleco temporary rivets, pricey but rally handy.

I don't know what was wrong - but the top edge welding was a total disaster

And finished product before paiting etc.

Having new 12 month ticket she deffinately deserved a good clean in and out.

Just quick update, Formula is used as my daily car now.

She developed some splutering/ hesitation/ choking when i'm trying to gently accelerate in low/mid rev range.

By the way, 4x4 camshaft is waiting to be fitted!

50bhp madnesss:slayer:, i wonder - if the difference will be big enough to be noticed.

I do love working on this car engine wise, fine tune is my fetish.
Need to admit that living in Scarborough makes finetune even easier thanks to

My garage is about 300yards above letter "M".

As reported previously Formula had splutering/ hesitation/ choking effect for good few weeks now and it was getting worse and worse, engine stalled two times this week when stopping at junction.
As it's used as daily car shes doing approx. 50 miles per day so it started to bother me recently.

Drove down to garage and the plan for tonight was: carb rebuild (full), new spark plugs, new air filter, new fuel filter, HT cable inspection, timming and dwell angle, compresion (cold), ignition coil check (Lucas Gold on order anyway).

Done the plugs first - old one benn there since i'm the owner so few years and 14k miles, filters replaced, HT leads checked, coil resistence measured ( what should be the Ohm figures for LT and HT?). One fuel hose identified as "replacement needed" as smell of petrol was some time noticed.

Took 3mm allen key,(with insulation), #10 socket, ratchet with extension, timing strobe lamp, dwell/rpm meter and off to Olivier's Mount track for finetune.

Cause of the failure/hesitation was mainly the dwell angle being way off - almost up to 65*. Timing was on 5*BTDC.

After few circles round the track (flat streight, sharp bends, climbing) and few stop at "pit stop" both values were adjusted accordingly to approx. 53* and 2*, 750-800 rpm.

Car now pulls as new, smooth nice idle.
All that is part of my preparation for our trip to Bonn/Germany in the end of the November. Not much road miles planned as we're taking ferry from Harwich to Rotherdam but still few hunderd miles.

I'm planing to have the 4x4 camshaft instaled next..

Just a quick update,

Just came back from short Euro-trip in a Black Panda.
The Car is great, my wife and I do like it even more now.

Been visiting my German frinds in Bonn for their re-union party so left Scarborough on Friday afternoon towards Hull Ferry Port, the traffic was huge so the Panda was last car let in on to feryry deck. After arriving to Zebrugge/Belgium 3,5h motorway driving car was parked next to their house. Party was bloody big, loud, long and lots of german beer. Left Bonn back to Zebrugge, arrived in to Hull and rather than going back to Scarbo we drove to Manchester City centre for her apointment in consulate/pasport bureau due to recent surname change.

The car done absolutely Great!!! Whole 668 miles
Did not missed a single beat, and with fuel consumption at level of 51mpg (5.5l/100km) it does make impresion, average speed been approx. at 60-62 mph.

I can only recomend other not to be scared to do long journey in a panda, yes i had lots of spares including timing belt, front and rear bearing, dizzy, coil, g/box oil but did not use any.

Looking forward for the Italia 2015 trip.

Time for quizzz...
Sorry for poor photo quality.

What is the item at the back of my panda?

If I were on my own not with passenger i guessing boot lid would be closed.

Few weeks ago i was dealing with small spluttering while accelerating on low revs at 3rd, 4th etc. Adjusting the dwell angle cured the issue but not for long, it started to choke again. Took the breaker point cassete out and both meeting contact surfaces were pitted at the center. I've found one of my spare oe cassete (secret stock) but apperetly it wasn't streight swap as the new set was" mirrored" so i was only able to use the spring loaded part of the contact, meeting half been grouded with dremel. After initial setting and re-adjustment after few miles now it all semms to be back to normal..

I just bought myself nice driver door skin for £20 - BARGIN!!!

Bad points are it's in Birmingham :bang:.

Any body from South of Birmingham comming up north for Pre- Italian road trip meeting?

edit:

I'm picking up roller shutter tommorow ( yes in a panda) from Oakham, so i'll do the Birmingham first.

Just been taking out front seat, rear seat and roof rack has been mounted.

This is going to be fun, 8h round trip, hope the road conditions will be fine and I'm not talking about snow - just other drivers slowing me down due to their four different tyres vehicles going sideways when white.

(Ps. roller shuter is 2.38m wide with 2.95m long spindle)

Right,

Collection trip went well, no big suprices other than roller shutter was sticking 5cm thru the boot opening therfore boot lid was strapped down, side gaps were coverd by cellotape to reduce wind noise and salt/water ingress.

Door skin (driver side) looks to be OE fiat part - dry stores for at least 9 years :slayer:- not bad for £20.

Garage roller shutter have slightly different side guides design therfore overall width coloud be 60mm wider :bang:. I may put some timber onto the old frame side to fill the gaps but if not shutter will got back on Ebay. Shame as it is good quality hardly used one year old shutter and costed me silly money for what it is.

Just received a NOIP letter from NYP.

The letter is quoting my Panda reg - unfortunately .
Yes, speed camera van sat in Scar`bo when I set off for recent collection trip.
40 in 30 zone, i'm willing to take the speed awarness course :worship: but with non GB licence it may not be the case.

Totaly forgoten that when on sisley's steelies the speedo reads spott on....

As a result of post above, i'm taking place in speed awareness course in few weeks.

On the Black panda - last week the car been used on daily basis as my Sub was awaiting few new inner cv boot.

During this week I did noticed that panda still does some hesitation during acceleration in high gear and increased rattle noise from dizzy assembly - so as a cure i've bought set of these:

Reconditioned distributor - contact less one, coil, all harneses - all for only £62 inc P&P.

Shame the coil is the later type as it is not compatible with my current 4x4 stock of coils.

if someone is interested
