Technical big time engine trouble!!

hiya,
I'm based in the midlands and have an 02 reg fiat multipla 1.9 td. it started making an awful noise and smoking underneath on a trip out recently. RAC was called and the mechanic said it sounded like the bottom end bearings were gone. the words he used when he heard it (it still starts) was "ooh dear, thats terminal!"
car has been recovered to my house and i now need to either get the engine fixed or replaced but i've only got a tiny budget available to get the work done. I'd hate to see it scrapped as all the family love the car but if i can't get it sorted for £500 maximum thats what its going to come to.
i'm not sure how to proceed. Any ideas?

Thats a sad story, but first off I'd want to prove its the engine. Sounds terminal if it is so a Scrappies engine would be your cheapest option but with purchase, fitting & the ECU trickery needed for the foreign body to be accepted by the car is going to put you waaaaay over budget...

Maybe scrap it & buy another car would be quicker, & ultimately cheaper in the long run?

I'd drain the oil and take a look at what comes out, if there's any metal fragments, etc. then it's probably terminal.
You can pick up second hand engines for around £300 but you'd have to install the new engine yourself and be reasonably confident about swapping components to make the ECU work.
If your budget is £500 for a working car, then it's another motor, sorry.

There is a full multipla on ebay for 450 under spares or repair still mot and tax just sounds like it starved ov diesel some where have a look if ya wanna break yours i am intrested in some bits and bobs

Sad to see it go as i've put a new rad, pads, disks and exhaust on it within the last six-eight months but i suppose i'm best to just cut my losses and throw it on ebay.

I bought a rear light from them 2 days ago and it was here when I got in from work tonight£10 + £6.50 p&p. Light is in great condition, sound like a reasonable breakers yard!

id be seriously interested in this and that engine you found + im only in walsall but depends how much i could get the engine fitted for :idea: will have too look into it and get back too ya unless anyone on here fancys doin it ? lol
