It depends what budget you are planning to spend. It also hugely depends on whether you are going to use the car for everyday purposes or just use it for the weekend drive.

If your budget is limited than you cant do much except for installing an performance air replacement filter and a sporty exhaust. I must tell you though, that if you install the latter wisely (not just for the sake of putting them on) you will gain a noticeable improvement in power.

Eg: the best way to optimise the air filter is by installing it (via extensions if need be) somewhere where it can suck cold air. Some people have even gone through the extent of cutting four 2 or 3 inch slits in the front mudguard so as to allow cold air to enter directly onto the air filter. But all this is useless if you dont cover the plastic connection (between engine and filter) with reflective foil. This, so as to reflect the heat away or else the engine will end up sucking hot air anyway. I couldnt be bothered with that, so I just stuck mine directly to the engine (removed all piping & extensions). The above, if done properly should give you a 4 bhp boost.

With regards to the exhaust dont just buy one and weld it on. NO! Remember that the standard exhaust pipe incorporates two silencer boxes and another one containing the catalytic converter. Rip everything off and replace with a straight pipe which will connect directly to the back box except for a small silencer box in the middle. This will increase another 4 bhp.

Some other cheap mods will be to replace your sparking plugs with a set of Splitfire Platinum plugs (which claim to give an extra 1bhp per plug) as well as replace the High Tension Leads. If you buy a good set of HT leads, it will see you with an extra 2-3bhp.

You can do all the above if you are on a limited budget and/or if you plan to use your car everyday. Mind you....you can also install a nitrous kit and still use the car everyday. The nitrous kit will relieve you from quite alot of money, but it will provide you with an extra and instant 50bhp at the touch of a switch. The advantage of this is that you can still use the car as normal without consuming more fuel or reducing reliability. You can even strip off the kit if you want to sell the car. You can of course set the nitrous kit to blow much more than an extra 50 bhp, but for that you need to do heavy engine mods. For a 1.6 or 1.8 engine, an extra 50bhp is still safe. You will have to keep an eye on how to use the nitrous....its a burden on the clutch (since it kicks in instantly) as well as the exhaust. I have already replaced 3 exhaust because of the nitro.

You can also change reprogramme or change the CPU, which can give you an extra 10-15bhp, but that will effect fuel consumption badly.

Last but not least, you can get a turbo fitted which will see an added 60,70 or 80bhp (depending on the engine capacity)....but....there are many buts.....
1. It is very costly
2. You need to change almost have the engine (pistons, driveshafts, injectors, radiator, modify bonnet for air ventilation, reprogramme CPU, etc)
3. Fuel consumption will be effected badly
4. Reliability may also suffer.
5. Insurance price hike
6. As far as I am concerned, you cant remove the blower. You'll have to change engine if you plan to resell otherwise it'll be difficult.
...in the end it will be more worth while investing to stuff in a coupe engine.

Since I live in Malta, I wont not able to give you any cost suggestions as I am not aware of the costs in the UK.

There....now be a good boy and two a couple of the above mentioned mods.

Let me just log in correctly and say that again...........

This is the last time I promise!!!

OHHHHHHHHHH MY GOD!!!!!!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: bhp

no sorry! I have to say it again oh my F!"£ing word!!!!

Cut holes in the bonnet for Ventilation to name but one of many blunders in the above statement.

So what you are telling me is that if you put a Turbo on your engine you have to cut holes in your bonnet!??!

Good Lord Nigels gonna have a feild day with this one! hahaha (I'm hysterical at the mo)

i only wanted to know what bhp people had and what they had done not an essay can any one else help me but thank you for the reply any way but a bit to long

cheers penfold

Penfold, to my knowledge no one on this forum has tuned a 1.6 to date. I have however spoken to a southern based company called UAD motorsport who claim to have tuned a 1.8 to 140ish BHP(cant remember the exact figure)

here is the url

There's no point in tuning a 1.6, you're never going to get the same performance as an HGT (147, 155 BHP) for your money - so why not just buy an HGT? After all they're not that expensive.

A good place to start is to take your car to a rolling road and get it tuned by a specialist using a custom chip.
I take my race car to a rolling road after every bit of engine work I do. Its easier to tune because its not all electronic, but I will typically gain an extra 5 bhp on what it was at the start of the session, just by readjusting mixture and timing.

Other fairly easy mods to the engine are opening up the inlet and exhaust ports, this will allow the engine to breath easier and give you more power.

Personally I wouldn't bother with an off the shelf chip.
On my HGT I had a custom chip done and the car tuned on a rolling road. Every engine is different, so by doing it this way gets the most out of your engine you can.
Make sure you do the exhaust and intake first though.

My 155 HGT put out, before any mods, 151 bhp (they are never quite what the manafacturers claim, so don't worrk if you engine is lower than the claimed figure), and after its currently at 168bhp.

I got the work done cheap, but it still cost me £1000 for exhaust inlet, chip and rolling road sessions.

Have a look around, but make the chip the last thing you do. Otherwise you will need to take it back to the rolling road every time you make any engine changes, which can really add up.

Also, you can reduce the weight will increase the power to weight ratio.
To give you an idea what difference this can make, my race car is an xr2, and the enigine is blueprinted with a race exhaust and intake, and thats about it.
A standard xr2 will produce about 60 bhp to the wheels, mine produces 95 to the wheels, 115 to the flywheel. Everything is stripped out, and rounds Brands indy I can lap 2 seconds a lap quicker than a lotus exige!
The point is, power to weight is the important bit. So work on both and you will get big performance gains.

tunning

i dont havea 1.6 i have a 2.0 hgt i wanted to know about that one (i never mensioned a 1.6)

Re: tunning

Sorry about that Penfold.

I was also under the impression that you had a 1.6?!?

So can we be expecting to see you at the Christmas meet then?

Still as I said above UAD are one od a small bunch who speacialise in Fiat tuning.

Give them a shout see what they can do for you.

yeri should be at the christmas meet if nothing bad happens and cheers ill give them a call and yer it is chipped

Buying an HGT was on my mind a couple of times, but everytime I drove one, I just couldnt find any reason to justify buying one.
With all the respect to all HGT owners, the very slight performance advantage over the 1.6 wasnt enough to buy an HGT that at after all consumed more fuel, more insurance, license fees, etc. So why buy one?

At the end of the day, the bigger smile was on my face when I thrashed my 1.6 with a 156bhp (or so they say) HGT....and he couldnt get past.

And as for you Mr. Anonymous, you can suck my dick, bitch.

Re: Re: bhp

Are you still talking dribble

Let me just say it again.

oh my GOD! It sounds like you read some of that straight from a magazine?
What are you talking about.
Couldn't get passed? is that a joke or are you been serious? The HGT would destroy a standard 1.6 every step of the way. There is no comparison between the two what so ever?
How old are you? Can you even drive?????
Are you sure when you test drove the HGT it was infact a HGT and not a push bike?

Hows about you go cut some holes in your bonnet so the air can circulate better?!?!!?! hahahahahaha (nice blunder)
