Any recommendations on a new battery that will fit and suit my 1970 500L please

Recently did this. Went for biggest I could find. Used the thread Peter mentioned as ref.

Went to start the 500 a couple of days ago and dead as a dodo. Tried plugging my battery charger in and it blew the fuse on it. Fitted another fuse, same again.

Thinking my battery charger was kaput I went an borrowed my neighbours who has a big industrial one like they use on car forecourts and can give a boost charge to start it straightaway but I thought I’d just leave it on normal charge for a few hours, so went and did some gardening.

Once I finished the gardening I was a bit hot and sweaty so thought I have a shower. Thinking to myself shall I just check the battery first or take a shower. Decided to check it first.

When I went back in the garage, I thought there’s a funny smell in here. Switched my inspection light on and there was smoke beginning to come out of the battery and it was red hot. It was still in the car at the time. So disconnected it very quickly and pulled it out of the car. Acid had started to seep out and down the sides but fortunately not enough to damage the car at all.

If I had left it and gone to have a shower I am pretty sure it would have probably gone up in flames because it was so hot. I had to pull it out the car with gloves on, so all in all a lucky escape to say the least. All I can think is that it must have gone short circuit inside.

Anyway ordered a new battery at 4pm yesterday from the guys in this thread, advanced battery supplies, second time I have used them. There service is superb to say the least, new battery turned up at just before 4pm today!

There is a guy on Facebook that takes away old batteries around here, I haven’t a clue what he does with them. Contacted him, left it out in the porch and he took it away at 5am this morning.

So back to square one now just £55 lighter! But mightily impressed with their service.

Blimey..... that was a near miss. Could it be the; trickle charging?

I have used it on the battery for years and I have another one on my modern, that’s not so modern any more and they have been fine.

I said to you that I thought I had left the lights on but thinking back I hadn’t, as the ignition was off. The battery had just died, there was a tiny bit in it but at the time I thought it was the lights that had caused it so just tried to recharge it!

I double check the alternator output tomorrow and make sure it’s within spec.

That's what fried my first battery ages ago; the dynamo was kicking out too much because of the old mechanical regulator.

What make of alternator is it. I renovated my campervan alternator (Marelli) a couple of weeks ago and found a cheap UK source of spare parts which included the slip-ring and brush-box. Despite me being a top elektrikool operative (as you know), I was surprised how simple those things are when you get them in bits...even more surprised when it worked.:D

It’s the one with the built in regulator Zelmot I think? Thinking about I only bought it last year so I would be surprised.

I too had great service when buying the battery. I replaced my mechanical voltage reg with an electronic one. Too much voltage was going to the battery and it got fried.

You got me a bit paranoid about the trickle charger! Considering I had connected it to my new battery. It has a series of leds on it that show the status of the battery in relation to how charged it is and they basically change from red to amber then green. I had checked it in the evening and it was still the same as it had been a few hours earlier but I disregarded this as it hadn’t been on too long.

Then paranoia set it and I went and checked it very late last night and the LED’s hadn’t changed which is really unusual, so I disconnected. I am not convinced it wasn’t the cause after all, bearing in mind it was the only thing connected to the battery. Anyway I decided to bin it and get the same one that is connected to my ‘not so’ modern. Which is much more sophisticated and carries out a lot more checks and balances.
