hi all , any one help me out on this one , i have had an intermittent battery light flash up on the dash of my 05 jtd and now it has a flat battery , the car has just done a 140 mile trip without problems and now the light flashes on and off then the battery dies could this be tha battery or the alternator

Sounds like the alternator.
The battery light should come on when the ignition is on then go out once the engine has started. Check the output with a volt meter, engine idling, volt meter connected to battery and you should see 14v give or take 0.5v. Also check this reading with the earth probe of the volt meter touching the engine, you should see the same reading on the volt meter.
If the volt meter reading is 12v then it's the alternator.

Sounds like worn out brushes, so it might be worth trying a new brush pack / regulator. You will have to identify what make model of alternator is fitted to see if the brushes can be replaced.

thanks to all who replied will do some checking tomorrow

changing a brush pack ..it's fiddly.. but there is NO NEED to remove the alternator from the car.. could save HOURS

basically with the engine OFF you should have 12 Volts at the battery terminals,

and with the engine running you should have 14 Volts ( extra power from the alternator);)

I'd do that test initially,(y)
while you're there .. double check the battery cables are clamped tightly..;)
