My air-con (2002 jtd) stopped working a few months ago. I thought it was a holed condenser again, same as a year ago, so have ignored it. Just last weekend the car's original battery finally failed. Put a new battery in and the car's going fine again. And the air-con works again! Whatever is switched on by the dashboard button is now doing it's thing and the system works. Seems really weird to me (not that I'm complaining!) So does the air-con start/switch-on rely on a lot of battery power, or is it some other coincidence?

Theres an electro-magnetic clutch on the front of an air conditioning compressor, the control for it will be run through a relay, so the switch will be on a low amperage circuit with the main current for the clutch going through the relay.

There certainly could be some connection, but I fancy that it is coincidence as the alternator should generate sufficient current during use to run all the cars systems.

The 'connector' that joins loom to the integral wiring on the AC pump is an elongated affair that has the appearance of a black in-line fuseholder. But when you investigate, its an encapsulated coil or similar. Could the breakdown of the internals in this be the problem if the alternator/battery voltage is OK? (Breakdown as in similar to the ageing of the RPM sensor etc).

a thought anyway

Thanks for your replies. I don't know, I just plonked the new battery in so didn't move the air-con connector. Don't want to play around too much in case it stops again! At least for now it's ok. So if your air-con suddenly stops working, just check the battery is ok before you spend money on an air-con diagnosis ;)
