Technical Battery failure

I'm no expert on batteries (apparently.. :D ) especially the AGM doodah.. but it's a good post from Andy. I knew most of it.. but he explained it a bit better than I managed. (y)

Most of my fleet's batteries are the old-style with the filler screws on each cell and a vent on one end. The filler screws are covered over with a Bosch or Yuasa sticker, but they're still there.

Rasputin (2013 500 Pop) is more unusual, since it's the only car I have apart from my 04 Stilo that was built this century.. :D

That has a S&S system but from no intimate familiarity with its battery (new-ish car to me and it's half hidden) it looks like a regular tech' battery. Before I bought the charger I looked up what battery it should have and the Halfords quoted battery was either a regular type (HB202) which is tiny and non-S&S and looks like what I've got.. :D or it could (maybe should) have an "S&S battery" (EFB013) which is larger, more expensive and probably why Rasputin doesn't have it. That said the S&S works, when the battery is well charged (though that may not last).

So.. I suppose my questione would be, if I bought a EFB013 when the current one expires, could I charge it, or should I not? It might be clear if I had the battery in front of me (no vent might suggest Ahhhh Ahhhh Ahhhh ) but the battery in the store seemed to have a vent and the usual arrangement of covered over with a sticker cells/screws.

Just curiouse.

Halfords EFB013 Start/Stop
• AH: 60AH
• Dimensions (L:LOL:xH): 243x175x190mm
• Startup Power: 560 Amps
• Weight (kg): 16.6kg

On the other hand.... based on my theory that you can ignite anything, if you put enough amps through it... I wonder if the battery tray can accommodate a 278mm long battery, for those really 'orrible, wet and cold winter days? :D

Halfords EFB096 Start/Stop
• AH: 75Ah
• Dimensions (L:LOL:xH): 278x175x190mm
• Startup Power: 700 Amps
• Weight (kg): 19.3kg

After exhaustive enquiries a couple of years ago, on this forum and elsewhere, I established that the 2012 Twinair with S/S required an EFB battery (local FIAT dealer said AGM!) and fitted same. The car had been running with a 'standard' battery (fitted by FIAT!) for 2.5 years but the S/S worked flawlessly all that time.

Most battery places I spoke to couldn't even find the car, let alone the right battery, in their reference material (they all appear to use the same computer listing) and to actually confirm the correct battery I needed to discuss the matter with the head of Asia/Australia sales of a local battery manufacturer and place a special order with his recommended battery retailer - even then the first battery delivered was incorrect.

I'd be willing to bet that many, if not most, S/S FIAT's in this country are running with the wrong battery.

So, new Varta B36 standard battery(£46) and all good. 're the non working tailgate it seems the car needs unlocking, locking, unlocking and then normal operation returns.
I'm glad it failed on me close to home as my wife is away this weekend in the car.
