Barge of Frenchness...

Introduction

Yep, another one :spin:

But... This car is the replacement for my beloved van

For the miles I put up in the year this will save me a fortune in fuel. Even though tax is double what the van costs it still returns a saving of over €600 after oil, insurance, servicing etc etc etc...

Fear not, I'm not going to destroy my many hours of hard work! I have something lined up for it. Will make a great weekend van... ;)

Anyways, onto said car! These cars always facinated and appealed to me, probably because of this film :p

Pity its not blue...
Image1993.jpg

But I'm not complaining :)
Image1994.jpg

Just needs bits and bobs here and there :)
Image1995.jpg

I'm going to focus my spare time on this for the moment, normal service will resume when this is somewhat right (y)
Fairly busy these days!

But I do what I can when I can :)

Seats back in and its a beaut to sit into :worship:

Got a T-Belt kit and attempted to fit it on... (lack of cameraphone is annoying :bang:)

11mm bolt on the rear cover was a real c-unit to get at! But I got it :slayer:

All was going well untill I got to the pulley bolt. Jumped 4 teeth back

No valve contact though :)

I'll get it off... ;)

And its all back together :)

Belt off
Image1525.jpg

New roller and tensioner :) Strangely, the old roller and tensioner weren't that old :bang:
Image15310.jpg

Now this was fun trying to get this back...
Image15410.jpg

It tensions the belt. I ended up lowering the engine on the plunger to hold it in the slack position!
Image15510.jpg

And it worked (y)

This was the fecker that wouldn't open...
Image15610.jpg

So I got another pulley and bolt!
Image15710.jpg

So I gave it a test run, back to normal (y)

Keep watching... ;)

Time to sort the wonkey engine!
Image16210.jpg

A straight foreward job... Became a pig of a job :bang: Everything seized!
Image16310.jpg

But I got it out :slayer:
Image1648.jpg

So why was my engine wonkey? Here's the old and the older side by side
Image16610.jpg

Yep, no centre

Cleaned up the new old piece
Image16710.jpg

Fitted and much better

Any opinions onto my choice of calliper paint?
Image16810.jpg

I'll be painting the drums and callipers anyway, just have a range of colours to choose from!

That French blue has grown on me...

It damned well has grown on me!

This evenings job was to sort the crappy handbrake. So off with...
Image1885.jpg

Drums were then cleaned and painted :)
Image1891.jpg

When all adjusted up, I put them back on
Image194.jpg

Kinda works, looks better with the wheel on (y)

While waiting for that to dry, I decided to sort my lack of miles

Off with the trim... This doesn't look right!
Image19010.jpg

I was right, changed clocks at some stage
Image191.jpg

I cracked on, changed my bulb...
Image1922.jpg

Then after cleaning the speedo we have miles again :D
Image193.jpg

Wonder what the original mileage was... :shakehead:

Back to the barge (y)

The speedo that came with it annoyed the crap out of me!!!

So back to the local scrappies and I got more toys (including a climate display and clock :))
Image2063.jpg

OUT!!!
Image2064.jpg

Change some blown bulbs...
Image2065.jpg

Then put it in (y)
Image2066.jpg

Note I have now lost 35k miles :bang: I'll put that right someday (y)

But a ha! Nothing is that simple with a French car now is it! Went for a test drive, speedo reads wrong  indicated 30mph is actually 70mph

So back out...
Image2067.jpg

Dismantle more...
Image2068.jpg

Image2070.jpg

Oil level indicator
Image2072.jpg

More inspecting...
Image2073.jpg

Then I saw it...
Image2069.jpg

Broken track :bang:

To the garage! First, a vain attempt to solder a wire to the track....
Image2071.jpg

Didn't work!

Next, solder a wire to the pcb direct...
Image2101.jpg

Image2074.jpg

Then using another set of plugs as a guide...
Image2102.jpg

Find the correct wire
Image2103.jpg

Then splice and add another wire (y)
Image2104.jpg

Connect...
Image2105.jpg

Didn't work!

Back to the Alfa Romeo office :D

Manually adjust the needle using the small wheel....
Image2106.jpg

After a few drives with a sat nav, I got it as right as I want it to be (y)

As she stands
Image2107.jpg

Clutch is knackered now, I'm not looking foreward to that

Nice work mate. (y) I could only ever dream of doing that.

You will if you put your mind to it (y)

Back to the barge :)

Firstly, we get miserable "paddy spec" cars over here. The most basic, crappy, bog standard things no one wants

This car didn't even come with the digital clock! :bang:

And trying to find the plug... I finally found it (y)
Image2114.jpg

Clock now works :D
Image2115.jpg

Now to get the plug up through the dash... A pig of a job! But I manoeuvred the plug and got it all in situ
Image2116.jpg

Much better :D

Now onto my next problem: My passenger window didn't work after new switches and a motor. Off with the trim...
Image2117.jpg

DISGUSTING :shakehead:

As you can see, here is what gives French electrics a bad name
Image2118.jpg

Poor design leading to damp build up and corrosion. That was just the start!

This was fun to do, contact by contact, each side and the matching plug
Image2119.jpg

It got messy very quickly
Image2120.jpg

While I had the space I said I'd whip out the relays for the crack. Just as well I did!
Image2121.jpg

A substitute was duly found
Image2122.jpg

Courtesy of BMW ;) take that French electrics! :slayer:
Image2123.jpg

Another relay was also corroded... On the inside too!
Image2124.jpg

And after all that, put everything back together...
Image2125.jpg

It works once more (y)

Keep watching... ;)

Just another day up here... ;)

Bought this on Saturday (y)
Image2134.jpg

Typical French. It's a... Pull clutch :bang:
Image2135.jpg

So today... Time to take my time as I haven't worked on one before :)
Image2136.jpg

These were a nightmare to take out due to being seized in place! They're for rad hoses
Image2138.jpg

See?
Image2140.jpg

I don't think coolant should be this colour...
Image2139.jpg

What idiote designed this??!
Image2137.jpg

Eventually
Image2141.jpg

Signs of a rough farm life :(
Image2143.jpg

Dog rough (it stank of dog!!!)
Image2145.jpg

Plenty more room :)
Image2144.jpg

My old friend...
Image2147.jpg

Lastly before the mounts, remove the grille
Image2146.jpg

For a clean bay (y)
Image2148.jpg

This was fun to get to this stage!
Image2149.jpg

But alas, have to wait to see what the clutch was like... ;)

I should spell the badge backwards for the laugh :ROFLMAO:

Aaaaaanyways...

Note the blue
Image2150.jpg

Not much life left! Also, more blue
Image2151.jpg

Blue= heat :(

Now the dirt of this...
Image2152.jpg

Couldn't have that!
Image2153.jpg

Then I went in and had a very long phone call... ;)

So today, I saw if the bay was cleaner :)
Image2154.jpg

Better (y)

I also decided to get a new turbo pipe
Image2155.jpg

Because the old one was a load of...
Image2156.jpg

How convenient eh?! :ROFLMAO:

Part of the old pipe, broke and still bolted to the manifold
Image2157.jpg

I decided, while its out, I'll clean some of the oil out
Image2158.jpg

There too
Image2159.jpg

And decided to clean the rocker cover
Image2160.jpg

Much better :)
Image2161.jpg

Next, the thermostat
Image2162.jpg

New one :)
Image2163.jpg

Eventually...
Image2164.jpg

A short while later...
Image2165.jpg

And installing it
Image2166.jpg

Just needs plumbing up (y)

So the other day, I decided to get the car driving again :)

Balljoints... A pig to get out!
Image206.jpg

But worth it
Image207.jpg

Just an example of what year of muck and water do to the calliper sliders with no rubber covers...
Image20910.jpg

Bit empty...
Image208.jpg

And soon after, on the ground :)

Now for a hair pulling sight... Ahhhh
Image210.jpg

To sort 1 wire!!!!! :bang::bang::bang:
Image211.jpg

At least my windows work beautifully now :D

French electrics post!!!! Ahhhh

But first, track rod ends :p
Image223.jpg

Original ones from new
Image224.jpg

Next a brake fluid change...
Image225.jpg

There's why
Image226.jpg

And that concluded that...

Next, a bootful of crap :spin:
Image229.jpg

Not wasting any time...
Image2301.jpg

Out!
Image232.jpg

And the loom too
Image231.jpg

Handy to clip in (y)
Image233.jpg

Wiring up the window reg loom :p
Image234.jpg

Now the front...
Image2351.jpg

Out with the old...
Image236.jpg

...when the door is off :bang:
Image237.jpg

Spot the replacement Seicento... ;)

Not a nice twisty multiplug either
Image2381.jpg

But fitted...
Image239.jpg

Also fitted rear door cards
Image240.jpg

Elec mirrors
Image241.jpg

Both of which don't work!!!:mad::mad:

Finally, new drop links
Image242.jpg

The old one fell out

I'm getting there... Nearly time for this as my daily driver ;)

Ugh...!

Needed a coolant change.... So out with the saucepan :p
Image246.jpg

And in with the new antifreeze :)
Image247.jpg

Only to find my radiator has shat itself :bang: £94 + vat for a new one  but that's for another day...

Decided to pillage a radio out of another car :p

Out!
Image249.jpg

Don't leave me...
Image250.jpg

In!!!
Image2511.jpg

Better :)

Now... It decided to be stubborn and refuse to rev up properly. Probably being French

Fuelling was the problem.

Decided to start at the back and work my way foreward. Started at the sender.

Bench out again...
Image252.jpg

Yep, pop riveted :bang:

Drilled out and plastic cover off...
Image253.jpg

Like something from an archaeological dig :ROFLMAO:

After a lot of swearing and hammering...
Image254.jpg

Yep, blocked :) cleaned up and ran perfect :D

Lastly the car needed a new battery
Image255.jpg

Starts on the button now (y)

I'm sick of the car already... What have I done! :(

As I'm sure you are aware, the XUD had to be de tuned as it out powered, both in HP and torque figures, the Gti-6. Obv Pug couldn't allow this, a Derv outgoing their sports car. A twist of a screw here, a turn of a valve there and boom, those things fly. I had a 306 sedan, it was great.
Doing a fab job here fella, keep it up and she'll be pristine.
Ta

Never knew that but alas there are a good few XUD's out there pushing out over 200bhp so that doesn't surprise me :D

More Pug stuff!

Lighting issue: No right full beam
Image259.jpg

Need to find the wires
Image261.jpg

Image260.jpg

Image262.jpg

Image263.jpg

Found the offender and we have light once more :)
Image265.jpg

Cleaned up
Image264.jpg

My radio fascia arrived
Image2174.jpg

Binning that radio...
Image2175.jpg

Tried to wire up a horn...
Image2177.jpg

FAIL!!!
Image2176.jpg

Next, door lock
Image2178.jpg

The old one refused to work right. It got the bin!
Image2179.jpg

Replaced the door hinge
Image2180.jpg

With a red un!
Image2181.jpg

Then, new radiator and top hose
Image2182.jpg

The old one was.... Beyond its sell by date
Image2183.jpg

Image2184.jpg

Better :)
Image2188.jpg

Then the passenger door card
Image2186.jpg

Dash trim
Image2187.jpg

Drivers door trim
Image2189.jpg

Image2190.jpg

Image2191.jpg

And scarily, that's the interior almost done....
Image2192.jpg

Just a clean needed and some speakers
