General Baragain Or Load of Hassle?

hey all, been looking for a little run about for me and GF for a couple of weeks and i've came accross a punto..

But.. it needs a new engine, it's very cheap, looks good, 10 months MOT and plenty tax.

he said a garage quoted him £250 for a new engine supply and fit, sounds verrryy cheap to me, possible white lie lol.

i know a garage that does work on the side, and i reckon they'd fit an engine fairly cheap for me.

just trying to work out if it would really be worth the headaches

may be worth it? but then while the engines out its obviously very worthwhile doing the cambelt and clutch etc which bumps up the cost and servicing it essential.

how cheap we talking? cos theres 2000 plate mk2 puntos round here for £595 with yrs mot and 4 months tax, was actually very tidy.

£100. nice tidy 55s. 10 month test 5 tax.

i'd have a mk2 for that price if i could, she loved my punto and that's as near as we'll be able to get to it.

i can always find really cheap bikes and turn a profit on them but i can never find cars for next to nothing

oh and it had a clutch a month ago

whats the body work like? whats the exhaust like? interior tidy? electrics working? bushes and arms reasonable? (don't know if you'd know without an engine lol) i'm not clued up on mk1's but thats the stuff i'd be looking for

well upto you, that seems pretty expensive to me, my 55s, and that is a gt replica cost me £150, with 11 months mot, and that was over a year ago when the mk1 punto was worth alot more, prices are rock bottom now.

should be able to pick up a 1.2 8v to shove in it for 75 quid is ok if the rest of the car is good and you are going to keep it. but not woth it to sell, it only be worth 200 quid fixed

just the cars lately, seem to have went up a bit, rekon i'll leave this one.

i'd have a mk1 punto with that much tax and test for £200 though if it was working lol, would be ideal

My 5door 2000 mk2 elx, was bought for 1800, granted from a dealer so maybe over priced, but £600 for an mk2 is a bargain.

i actually seen a few go for around £500 x/y reg and stuff, soon as i want one i can't find one

i saw the mk2 just parked down a road, id of bought it if i had the money, but unfortunatly didnt.

all sorts of things can vary the price like the mileage etc

also 3 door ones tend to be worth more than 5 doors
is it true that 3 doors are also slightly more to insure? i heard that but i dunno

i did put it in auction watch, even if it needed a new ecu they are 100 quid on ebay brand new

Whats the cheapest your looking at for an Mk2b sporting in good condition do you reckon?

mk2b sportings are still getting good money because everyone wants them
