i just recently had new clutch an gearbox fitted an about 3 days after this was done i slowly started to notice a slight banging or clunking(passenger side,i think) noise when driving,it mainly happens when turning left an when going over speedbumps, ive had a look under the car an the only thing i noticed was 1 exhaust mount as got a tie-rap/rip-tie,i had a good pull on the exhaust an this does move slightly an i can make it bang if pulled hard(against the heat shield half way down the pipe,im 75% sure its the exhaust but has any body had any problem similar?im going to try fix it(well i will fix it)at weekend, any thing else i could check while im there?

Check suspension too, if it only happens when turning one way or going over speed humps it might be a possibility (y)

If it is the suspension, then how much would it cost to fix?

Thanks

Suspension springs you can get for about £15, dampers for £30 and arms for £30. My home is surrounded by speed humps, so I have become familiar with these numbers.

As for your clunking noise, probably suspension, but do get the car on axle stands to check the exhaust security. I had a clunking underneath once. I replaced a handbrake cable clip that had a cable-tie instead. I put sponge washers in the cable clips, I repaired a damaged mounting of the heat shield, I replaced a perished exhaust hanger. Still, I had this clunking.

Had a new exhaust two weeks ago, clunking gone!

It shouldnt cost you anything. It went in to have a clutch/gearbox and it wasnt making any noise, but since they have worked on the car its making the noise.

Take it back to where you had the gearbox/clutch done and get them to investigate/fix.

it hard to get it back to garage because that opens and closes the same time as my work,so its always shut when i get there(7.30-5.30)

I have a similar thing - had no knocking and a knackered exhaust - had the exhaust replaced and now have a knocking (passenger side). Definately when cornering left and going over bumps and it is definately worse when more people are in the car. Should have taken it back to the garage but the work was completed a while ago - just trying to get it sorted now as it is putting people off buying the car!

I was wondering if there may have originally been some additional damping around the backbox that maybe was not replaced when the exhaust was. Whilst the suspension being the cause sounds plausible it was not evident that there was an suspension issue prior to the exhaust being replaced!

I have been under both front and back of car and see nothing suspicious and there is not that much play in the exhaust - so I too am at a loss as how to resolve!

If the exhaust has been taken off and replaced it is probably simply knocking against the rear suspension. If it is worse with people in the back it is almost certainly this.

The simple solution is to adjust the exhaust to make sure that it is further away from the rear axle so that when the rear axle 'rocks' backwards and forwards it does not hit the exhaust. This is usually done by undoing the rear exhaust joint and pulling the rear section of the exhaust a bit further back.

If someone has recently taken the exhaust off for you as part of a job, the your first port of call is for them to put it right. It will take minutes.

If you lie under the car you should be able to see where it is too close to the rear axle now.:slayer:

today i replaced the exhaust rubber that i thought was causing the problem an its still doing it:bang:the car still bangs when turning left,(an the noise sounds like its coming from front/left engine bay area)its get to be 1 of 3 things, engine mount, drive shaft or suspension, any body got any ideas on which one it could be?

i had a similar problem to this a few months back turned out to be ball joint on the wishbone.dont leave it too long as i did and 1 day hit a pothole and the ball joint collapsed.leaving me stranded and having to pay a hefty recovery fee.:( (n)
