Technical Back Fireing

Took Tipo for a quick spin to pick up some mates last night before I left it at home and went out, was driving it a bit hard cause someone made us late.

On heavy accelleration and then Hard braking, when I dipped the clutch there would be one or two loud bangs coming from somewhere along the exhaust system.

Whats wrong with my Tipo now and how do I stop it from doin this?

It does not overheat or anything but does smell a bit exploded when I park it up.

Everything comes in threes, First my hands free kit, then my processor now my car

No sports exhaust (yet ) but I did recently change Grade of petrol from Shell Optimax to plain Shell.

It was doing it before but no where near as often... I think....

Sounds almost like retarded ignition. look at your timing belt. has it jumped one tooth? If poss, remove lamba and give it a clean, and same time, give map sensor a clean and its pipe. Last, check exhaust for leaks and cat breaking up.

Nice one, Don't have a CAT but will have a look at the others... Where can I find the Lamba and MAP Sensor?

Don't think I've seen them in the Haynes Manual

Ok, you on a Carb? If so, either too rich a mixture, cambelt slipped a tooth, a sticking or burnt exhaust valve [prob unlikely] or leak in exhaust causing back pressure and the dreaded bang in exhauxt.

So I don't have a Lamba and MAP?

I think the most likely cause is the Timing Belt, I have one here and a Tensioner to fit but I dare not try myself cause I'll break it.

I'll see whats its like after its full service

I would still check the exhaust before you spend any money.

Gf's dad's Sedici backfired a bit until Walkers Northallerton diagnosed the exhaust cam being a tooth out.

Well the service is due anyhow and I get the Cam Belt Changed at every service.

I will check the Exhaust regardless, If I was loaded I'd change the whole system to eliminate it from possibility as I plan to do that anyway... just not yet

Just to let you guys know, I haven't had the Tipo looked at yet but the problem has gone


Mihgt have been something to do with the Fuel grade change and the motor getting used to the lower grade.
