General Back end making creaking and knocking noise???

For a month or so now, the rear of my mk2b has been making some quite loud knocking noises and creaks. Say i get up and get into my car like a normal day going to work i open the door and sit in and the car slightly rocks as it does and you can hear the creaking from the back as you do that.
When i go over bumps etc it creaks pretty bad and dont get me started when there are people in the back.
God its bad. Creaks like mad all the time, and it sounds like the exhaust starts bouncing off something under the car going over bumps etc.
Does anyone know what the problem is.
In my opinion i think its the rear shocks on the way out, i say on the way out i thing they have already gone!

If anyone could help that would be great and what would you recomend i do first?

There's a mod that can be done to the handbrake cables for creaking, as well as a special grease that can be applied to the rear axle bushes.

No matter what you do though, if you get in/out of the car with the handbrake on there will be a creak- this is due to the brake shoes being pulled about as they try to hold the drum steady while the suspension is moving. Some copper-slip applied to the backplate on the contact points will help, as well as the above mods.

The exhaust knock is almost always caused by a poorly-fitted rear exhaust box, usually mounted too far forward so it hits the axle when the vehicle is loaded-up. A quick adjustment should cure it.

i had the same problem on the punto 60sx.

it had only done 48,000 miles when this noise appeared.

it turned out to be faulty rear shock absorbers and new ones cured the the unbearable creaking.

mine did it too, i thought it would be either the shocks or i need of new springs
