Hello all,

I own an 5 door 1.7elx diesel Uno in india.am looking for some suggestion on cosmetics here.

i bought her in 2001 and now i can visibly feel drastic low in her sprint.
alex have been very helpful in guiding me to choose aftermarket alloys but still i have some more ideas on my own and requires your experieced thoughts over it...

1)Is it ok or possible to change the rear drum wheels to Disc wheels? if so what shld i consider?

2)How to improve my suspension? seen people discussing of "lowering springs"? will tht reduce the groundclearence? bcoz in india.. u will find pothholes as deep as meter more in an sq inch.. ( i have broke my oil sump twice already :slayer:) and to get on to the road from ground only trucks and buses can clear the road sholder.in an craze ,foolsihly i fitted my uno with mud tyres from yokhoma since then the ride smoothness has gone..too much rattling and stiff ride. now iam going to chance wheels tyres etc.. wht other things i shld chk before doing this?

3)which type of sunroof will suit this 5door Uno.. will the lamella type u find in stilo would lok good for Uno?other options i have pasted here as link.. pls suggest me one which wud look good.

thanks in advance

Ashok

lol just seen this, rarely visit the uno section but might give you some help if i can.

1. yes you can change the rear drums to discs. however to do this you should also make the front discs and calipers better to maintain a safe brake bias.

2. depends what you are after. might be able to get some progressive springs or something or maybe even get higher springs to improve ride quality maybe at the cost of handling. maybe fitting different sized tyres would also be useful. a greater profile, may help. the off road tyres may have more rubber so less air if that makes sense?

3. sorry no idea

4. i guess the front fenders and bumpers would but the rest seems for 3 door, though someone else might be able to help you more.

5. Hid. depends upon legality and how the headlamps on unos are.

hope that helps a little bit.

uno turbo front and rear bumpers will fit, you will need an uno turbo full rear beam for the discs i think

after thinking about it, im not sure anymore, i had a look at doing it to a 45s a long time ago and decided not to, im sure i was going to have to swap the rear beam, but maybe you could just swap the hubs?

ashok, everything is swappable, but, and this is the big but, none of the bits you want are either available or easy to get hold of in india. for instance the rear disc conversion is pretty much a straight swap out for turbo units (rear beam, hubs, calipers, discs, pads, master and servo), as are the bumpers, but the tubs never made it out there (pal/fiat only made the diesel)

as for sunroof, chas is the expert, but if you are handy with an angle grinder, a tilt slide, with new headliner from a mk1 70sx is again a straight swap, however again, never made it out there.

i've spent a lot of time in india, mainly in mumbai, but also out to the east, yes the roads are appalling, even in city centres, lowering serves no purpose unless you a sachin with unlimited funds, and plan to keep your ferrari on either the queens necklace or the expressways. i would stick to heavy duty "high" rubber on steelies, my mrs had a padmini which coped very well with the roads, better than her dads newer swift....

essentially, all the bits you want are in europe, weigh a lot, are bulky, and will cost a small fortune to ship out to you. when (and they will) go wrong, replacement will be a nightmare.

sorry to blow a hole in your dreams big dawg, but....remember this...fiat are undergoing heavy all out restructuring this year in india, with the express aim of getting a slice of an ever increasing pie, the upshot, the panda, 500, linea and other models are coming your way, the panda in active form is an altogether better proposition than re-engineering the older uno.

The factory fitted Fiat tilt and slide sunroof, as fitted to mk1's and early mk2's, is NOT a straight swap into a non sunroof Uno. There are extra pressings and strengthenings in the roof panel of those with factory fitted sunroofs, plus a series of studs that the sunroof bolts onto that non sunroof models don't have.

If you really want to fit a factory Uno sunroof then you need to find one on another Uno and swap the whole roof panel over. This will entail drilling out lots of spot welds and welding the new panel into your car. Not to mention painting afterwards.

Fitting a sunroof from another model is even more problematic and likely to be nothing but a headache. If you really want to fit a sunroof then you'll have to find an aftermarket self contained unit that clamps to the sunroof aperature, after you've cut out the appropriate sized hole that is.

I have this dilema with my new Uno - I like sunroofs but do I fit one to a very original and standard 1989 70SX with only 36K miles on the clock? I shall see whether I fry or not come the summer!

hi,
is it possible to fix an NOS kit with an non-turbo diesel engine?

hey ashok,

i want to know where did you source the 98 PCD alloys for your car from in madras. coz i stay in bangalore, and i am finding it hard to find 14" 98 PCD alloys for my Uno. i will post some pics of my car soon.

i made some asthetic mods like, painted my bonnet black (matt finish). its does look pretty cool. i wanna get some 14" alloys so i can fit 175mm tyres onto it. also i am looking for the front fog lamps for the uno. and this is something which i am jus unable to find. do u know any place in madras where i could source them.
