Audio problems in Punto ELX

Hi all,

Ive just bought a Punto ELX (2000) which i assume is MK2 although im not sure. It came with the standard ELX speakers / sub and headunit (tape). I want to change the headunit to one that can do CD/MP3 - possibly Kenwoods KDC-M7024.

Other than the normal problems of not knowing how the wires at the back of the headunit are connected, (and how the sub is connected as well) I also have some problems with the speakers.

Currently the only speakers that are working are the rear left, sub, front left and right tweaters. Ive been able to check the wires from the rear right and these are ok, the speaker has a 3.3 ohm resistance which is the same as the left so im assuming this is ok. So i have no idea why no sound comes out.

The two main front speakers dont work but as the tweaters do i must assume the wires from the head unit are ok. I dont realy want to, and dont know how to, take the door pannels off to find out.

The upshot of all that is then:
1) What changes (if any) need to be made to the connector(s) for the head unit need to be made to use current speakers + sub
2) Any suggestions for the rear right speaker prob
3) Any suggestions for the front main speakers prob
4) If recomend new speakers, which type etc (reasonable price range please) and can the current sub be used
5) If anyone has any comments about the headunit KDC-M7024 let me know.

hi there i will try and help on sum of your queries.

1) you do not need to change any of the connectors in the car to wire up for the new head unit. you should be able to just unplug the block from back of old one and put into your new stereo. with just a couple of points, the multi colored blocks you do not need to connect up to your new stereo so just leave that one lose. it was only used for the on board computer to check if you had put in the fiat radio code. the second point is that your new stereo may not turn off when you turn the engine off unless you move 2 wires around. but if you are not botherd that you have to manually turn the radio off then not a problem.

2)hmm the rear right speaker prob sounds a strange one, this may be an obvious thing but make sure the two wires are attached properly to teh speaker. this sounds obvious buti spent an hour trying to work out why a rear speaker dint work once then i noticed i had pulled conector just off the pin Doh! the wire for the rear right speaker (driver side) comes from the other side of the boot near the sub. so you could check any connections there.

3) the front speaker prob is even stranger. again has to be a wiring problem sumwere. are the speakers actually there?? i just wondered if previous owner had fitted upgraded speakers and took them out before selling car. from what i am reading in front of me as i type this you dont need to take of teh door panels to get to the speakers. the grills you are supposed to be able to prise of being carefull not to snap any retaining clips and then the speakers are held in with 3 screws. leat then you can ceck what wiring is back there.

cant really help with your next 2 questions. as a side note the sub is just connected up by the normall seakers wires, rear left and right speakers. the power for the sub come form the elec arial pin on back of you stereo and somthing at back of the car sorts out the sub signals from the rear speaker signals.


all this info relates to mk2 punto wich sounds like you have. i hope some of what i have put helps you. would be interested to know what the speaker problems were if you get it sorted.

Ive managed to take the frount grills off the doors and have found that the Left Frount (Passanger Side) was not connected and once reconnected it worked fine.

On the case of the driver side speakers, further from my orignal post ive found out that the tweeter on this side dose not work as well. The main speakers are all connected correctly and have continuity to the back of the head unit. This has lead me to belive that the output on the head unit for this side is not working.

Ive just got hold of a MK2 information disk so tracing the faults will become a little easyer.

In the case of getting the headunit to know when the ignition is on.

As far as I can work out using the following diagram,

8 6 4 2
7 5 3 1

3 would be the switched line and 7 will have a 12v power.

To get the kenwood M7024 to work correctly, i would need to switch
these two around. Is this correct?

well if that diagram was for teh punto wiringthen nope you wrong big style sorry. here is the correct one

1=Not Connected
2=Green and Blue - ignition 12v
3=Grey - auto antenna (powers fiat sub)
4=Red/Black - 12v
5=Not Connected
6=Red and White - 12v
7=Yellow and Green - 12v lighting (comes on when lights are on)
8=Black - Earth

as you can see fiat have supplied theres with 2 12v wires and one ignition (switchable) on mine all i had to do was move the wire from pin 2 to pin 4 the wire that was on pin 4 i taped up and left disconnected. as you did not need 2 perminant live wires.

Yep sorry should have said that i had used the Kenwood
diagram numbers :I

The nice thing about the HU kenwood is that they make it possible to switch the pins 4 and 7 around (by my diagram) what it doesnt take into acount is Fiats ability to use a very odd connection format

Also the HU has a Power Control on pin 5 (3 on punto) which should mean the sub will have power
