Athlon 64X2 or Intel Duo?

You have to balance CPU and GPU power, spend to much on one and the other will be the limiting factor, I'd tend to air on the side of graphics, as games get bigger they hit the GPU harder than the CPU.

2.23GHz of a dual core CPU means 2.23GHz, it's just the CPU can do two things at once rather than pretending to do two things at once. Games are starting to take advantage of the second core of dual core processors. In theory the 6400 is about the same performance as a 4GHz P4 give or take 10% or so per core. No that does not mean you have an 8GHz P4 equiv. CPU, it means you've got 2x 4GHz P4 equiv. cores (which isn't the same thing, you'll be lucky to get an 70% performance boost using both cores for one application, but you'll run two applications at almost the same speed as a 4GHz P4). I hope that's clear.

Yes, I've been doing more research and it makes sense. The Quad core was good reading, but a little out of my price range at the moment.

Essentially the biggest strain I will put through it is Medieval 2 total war. Now with a 3ghz P4 and a gig of ram and a 128 meg graphics card needed to run it well. How am I with

E6400 Duo 2
2 gig of ram at 667mhz
A Geforce 7600GT Graphics card (256meg)

Also a ASUS SKT-775 P5VD2-MX mother board to run it all.

I want BIG battles baby!

Make it future proof well as much as you can so get the best for your cash, Medieval War the only game you'll play for the rest of your life?

Potentially yes. Im still addicted to the original after 3 years of glorious battles.

Lol, seriously though. I cant afford future proof. But I think with the above spec most games will be playable for a fair while

I think Ill up the ante to an E6600 as the price of them has dropped recently.

For now I can only really afford the 7600GT, but if i get a motherboard that can do an SLI arrangement then i'm away!
