Fairly recently my car failed its 1st MOT at Arnie Clarke for two "bald" front tyres. I had them looked at after that by two mechanics (one an MOT tester) who said they were fine then had the car pass an MOT at an idependant garage with same tyres on.

Hillarious thing is this. I got the MOT + Service package (because it seemed a fair deal). On the service notes (done about 10mins before the MOT) it says

Front Tyres

Left 2.4mm tread Right 2.5mm tread. (legal req 1.6mm)

Then they had the cheek to fail its MOT stating the front tyres were under the 1.6mm legal requirement. THE CHEEK, wish I had seen this at the time but alas nevermind.

I know some of you work for, like, dont like Arnold Clark. Im not saying anything about them either way. Just thought that that was worth a post.

just incase i have to use it,i'm in scotland aswell you see,btw i would say its the garages that are inconsistent rather than fiat.

Shocking really isnt it? Im still wondering if I should go to VOSA:confused:

You should report it, because they're clearly FAILING MOTs that shoud pass - so egro they might be PASSING MOTs that should FAIL.

Worth a mention. (y)

Lol I doubt it, They failed it because the want money from repairs, they had already priced me two new tyres when i had arrived and wanted to fit them there and then and had the cheek to tell me I wasnt allowed to take the car away untill the work was done!!! love it.

Now, that is very cheeky!

I think mine will be due for an MOT in March, I shall sort the tyres before then.

So what did you do Beany?

Sounds like one tech done the service and another done the MOT. It's up to the MOT tester to use his discretion aswell. I assume the tyres have no other faults like edge(s) worn, bulges, sidewall damage?

2.4mm...must of been a fancy depth guage to measure that.

sorry, i did mean the dealers

;)

EDIT...I was checking some tyres few weeks back and found a 1mm descrepency around the centre part on one of them. Obviously uneven wear but I checked it a few times just to be sure.

p.s. moved to garages section.

I don't know how garages measure tyre treads. On my car, at the last service, they recorded the front tyres at 2.0 mm (both sides). I did not put new tyres on, did another 12.5K miles and this service the front tyres were recorded at 2.3 mm (both sides)

I think I must have been lucky and picked up the melted rubber from the road off the car infront or something. LOL

what would vosa do?

VOSA are the people who approve MoT testing stations. They investigate complaints and can remove the right to conduct MoT tests, from the tester and the site!

I tend to take my car to a local MoT testers, that is all they do, no garage work, you then get a fair result.

One local garage I used to use tended to fail cars on brake inbalance and tyres a lot as they were a tyre and brake firm by trade. Each failure tended to earn extra. Called their bluff one time when my car went to be serviced and they called to say the brake pads at the front where worn right down. I said I'd have to think about it, then popped in. I asked to see the offending pads, they picked up a set of worn pads off the desk, I took them out to the car to talk to the mech and found my pads fully assmebled still on the car! They claimed they'd mixed up the person to call about the work needed, and my car was fine. I got a little cross and used words like 'trading standards' and 'con men' and 'should know which car is which if they are mechanics' and 'let me see all the parts you have replaced on my car' and so on, I made sure I did so in the waiting area with lots of people hanging about. I got the full service for free and a 50% off voucher for next service.

Strangely I have never used it!
