Are we retaining enough new members?

Are we retaining enough new members?

seems to be a lot of new members seem to sign up just to browse, registrations in the last few months are high but they dont seem to post. Its been an ongoing problem for the last year or so.

yeah, but not nessicarily just scotland either, we would welcome anyone that wants to join, its a forum for fiats, just happens to be set up by a bloke from scotland lol

We are not competing with FF. we offer a similar thing from a different angle.

Some people preffer a more localy based forum, with more local interaction and a tighter group of members than on somewhere like FF, were you're just a number really.

I'm not going to get into the politics of the whole thing, but basicly, while there are many great reasons FF is a useful tool, there are alot of reasons why people are put off using FF. this is part of the reason i see somewhere like FS as equally important.

ask yourself this, when was the last time FF organised any meets in scotland?, all, and i mean ALL of the events north of the border in the past few years i am aware of were organised by FS members. FF are only interested in having a presence in the big events like the italian car day up north. That's fair enough imo, but without somewhere like FS, most Scottish members would be completley isolated from events because there's pretty much no focuse north of newcastle!. Events in Scotland would die out or at least severly drop in numbers without a more local forum doing the bulk of the organising.

We also have the advantadge of more localised advice, where to get parts, where to go for servicing etc. also potential help from nearby memmbers. while this also happens on FF, it happens to a far smaller extent than on here. Due to its sheer size, FF is somewhat impersonal. some people may preffer that approach, some may not.

Fine and well the reasons you named, not really answered what i ask. Why are we not retaining the new members? (i.e. they are not becoming active (gradually)).

As stuarty pointed out, this has been happening for the past year or so. May be what we think it was important, is no longer applicable to new members?

behind the scenes we are all working as hard as we can to try and provide a forum that everyone can enjoy and come back to. Thats why we have had 2 forum changes in as many years, we had a suggestions section but people never used it, we haveasked in the past what members would like to see on the forum, nobody replies.

We all want FS to be bustling and vibrant but need input from members like you ming :)

Thing is, our retained signups are actually BETTER than FF's statisticly. theres a large number of people sign up to FF seeking advice, sometimes they ask, get the answer and disappear, sometimes they find the answer without asking before they dissapear. the amount of consistent repeat users is actually tiny for the number of signups they have.

People sign up to FF mainly looking for help and get the service they require. its used as a tool and nothing else for a good number of signups, where as the people who sign up here generally seem to be looking for more of a "fiat Club" type of site. not so much a tool but a social place between owners. the fact they can get some advice here too if they need it is just an added bonus.

I agree though, the number of retained users isn't too hot, but when you look at it in the great scheme of things, it's far better than it initialy looks at first glance.

the question we need to ask is, how do we improve these numbers?. everyone has a different answer to that, and not all bases can be covered. it's all about appealing to the largest userbase we can and we are constantly looking at ways to appeal to more people.

believe me, the will to grow the site and make it more widely used is something that is regularly discussed, and nothing goes unnoticed ;)

Hey peeps,

It just seems the forum is always used by a selected few .....

Or the new members just not as active as we are?

Ming

I wish I knew the answer to your question Ming.

The long and the short of it is that we seem to be getting a LOT of sign ups, but retention seems to be an issue. I'm damned if I know why. The forum is, imo at least, a straightforward layout and nice, clean design. Last year in particular I think we excelled with meets, thanks in no small part to the likes of Steve, Rob and Mark joining the team. Having folk like Stuart and Hamish along too frees me up to get other stuff done.

A quick glance at behind the scenes stats doesnt indicate a drop in site visits - whether folk are logging on, or simply browsing as a guest is another question. I suspect (and hope) that the latter is, at worst, the situation we're at just now.

Back to your point, why the n00bs aren't posting - I really don't know why. If anyone knows why, or has any suggestions then by all means, give me a shout! Hopefully things like the project section and the new look technical forums will help feed relevant information back into the forums, and thus help retain new members (and maybe get some more of them posting too!)

Cheers,
Martyn

I think Ming like Mark said, this is more of a Club, wheras FF is a Forum upon wher people are simply signing up to seek advice or look at Diagrams for different Vehicles.

I am on another Car Club that has the Title 'Scottish' in the name but we have people from South of the border and even a club I used to belong to (Untill they threw me out) they have members in Newcastle, Blyth etc etc.

But I can see where you'r coming from Ming, people sign up and then that's it, they feel once they've signed up everyone's just suddenly going to approach them and say "Hi do you need any help" sort of thing.

Martyn what's the last Members Count? (i.e how many people are registered on the site??)

As a relatively new member with a low post count, for me posting up stuff is more to do with personal confidence than anything else. At first I did sign up just to see what was going on back north of the border in the Fiat world but am now drawn to this forum more as there is a much more friendly atmosphere on it. I am gradually finding the confidence to post in the odd thread and am sure that confidence will grow. I'll be setting up a project thread shortly too as av something to talk about :woot: Maybe there are alot of the newer sign up's feeling the same and hopefully they'll be drawn in too.

As for meets, there is a great line up for the year ahead, my struggle is work/uni/kids/family/distance etc. I do hope to make it to a meet one day in the not so distant future. Referring to meets on FF, they class the St. Andrews meet as south scotland, how can it be when it's north of Edinburgh?? Maybe that's just me, an FF meets in the north west england are rarely above the M62 Manchester area, cos a lot southerners think that's where scotland starts :ROFLMAO:

Anyways hope ma 10pence worth helps, bed time for me. Weekly road trip to Bolton in 5hrs time :dizzy2:

Thanks for the feedback Richard, it is always interesting to see what new members think of the place! Trust you're enjoying your calendar?

Andi - just a quick number crunch, spambots etc aside I count 15 new members since January 1st. Of them, only 4 are what we call Zero Posters, the rest have at LEAST one post to their name. (btw, as a percentage that's not even 25% of sign ups this year lost. A near 75% per cent retention ratio I make that!)

Those who have registered and introduced themselves may fall into the category of users who browse this place as guests. Who knows!

Whats more interesting is that out of those 15 members, two have taken out premium membership. And iirc they did so within about 24 hours of joining. If we can keep this up, and keep the active community we already have posting, then I don't see there being a long term problem. We just need the mix to be right!

BTW - everyone can help spread the word about this place - joing us on bebo & facebook, flyer other Fiat cars when possible etc..even tell your friends to join. As stuart pointed out, this site was set up to provide meets etc for Fiat drivers in Scotland. Doesn't mean we're only open to folk who stay in Scotland!

Cheers,
Martyn

thanks for your input Richard, glad to hear that new members like the site:thumbs:

I've said it to Martyn a few times - compared to when I first joined, FS is positively bustling and has been for the past year at least. The new member posting issue is an issue but I think it's simply related to whether that person feels like they want to post something or feels like they have something to add to a topic that's already going on here. They may well simply be trying to find info on something relevant to the region that other Fiat sites may not have.

As Richard said, it can be about confidence and there's some other forums that tend to shoot new members down if they don't follow supposed "forum etiquette" like using the search function for example (it's a personal annoyance of mine). A bad first experience like that, like any first impression can ruin a forum experience for someone just starting out on it.

This forum and a few others are places I feel comfortable to post and chat away and hopefully that friendly environment will encourage other newbies to post as well. Doesn't need to be a massively intellectual post or profoundly thought out, just say what you feel (y)
