My rear Brakes have started whining when warm and have been told that the pads are low.

If I am replacing the rear pads I would like to do the front too.

2 questions, it is likely that the disc's would need doing?
and
I am skint! I need something cheap (the missus is getting annoyed with the cost of the Marea now) My local garage wants £65 for front pads fitted and £55 for the rear pads, no disc's included.

Can anybody reccomend anywhere or someone to talk to to get it cheaper. I don't mind having to fit them myself, I'm ok with car DIY :)

Thanks

Darren

http://poweritalia.co.uk/ (Note: the prices are for pads AND discs using genuine FIAT parts). Considering Rog will do rear pads and discs for £79 I'd say your garage is a bit pricey on the rears.
Otherwise it's off to local Motor Factor parts place to get the bits and fit them yourself chap. Pads easy and I'm told discs are too but never done them.

Cheers Oz,

If only Rog wasn't soooo far away!!!

Gonna phone around all my local places, kwik fit wont even give me a price unless I take my 'french' car to them for a whole morning for them to look at!!

p.s. never noticed the head poking out above your car before on your sig...

Be careful! There's a lot of low grade Chinese imports about that have a tendancy to warp and / or shatter. To be honest, considering brakes are a lifeline I would only recommend OEM parts or reputable local parts suppliers. Ebay worries me a great deal when it comes to brake parts.

Ok no probs,

I think i have ordered from that ebay company before, I just rang them and asked how much for all pads & discs, they are getting back to me.

I will post back and try to find out what make they are too :)

ok just got off the phone and the guy reckons they are "Drivemaster" brakes

Front disc's & pads = £51.99
Rear disc's & pads = £29.00
Postage = £10.00(ish)

all pads & disc's *= £90.99*

Considering a local tyre place wanted £360 fitted i think thats cheap,

Anyone heard of "Drivemaster" are they half decent or should I stay away?

Really don't like the sound of that chap. They sound far too cheap but may be fine.
Gonna butt out now though as I think my opinion is clear enough. ;)

discs and pads are so easy to fit both back and front you can do it yourself.
if you can do rear shocks you can do pads and disc just make sure you get a brake rewind tool for the rears other than that easy.
fronts are.
remove wheel undo both bolts holding caliper on and remove caliper and pads then remove the 2 10mm pin bolts that hold the disc to the hub. refit in reverse

rears are
remove wheel again unbolt caliper remove pads use rewind tool to wind in piston and then remove the pin bolts and remove disc. refit in reverse.

make sure you remove the brake fluid reservior cap and place a cloth around the top.
also after each corner done make sure you press the brake peddle until it goes stiff again then carry on to the next corner.

take it easy for a few hundred miles so they bed in

cheers

Darren ive had some cheap pads discs for the front of mine (same sorta thing as the ones you posted, but £65). Considering im a "spirited" driver i havn't had any problems with warping or shattering as Oz has stated. One problem however is that they have bugger all power in them, enough to pass the MOT but i'm not particulary confident in them. I do agree with Oz and that you should try get something half decent not just those cheap things. Also as Andy has said you can fit them soooo easyily that you might aswell do it yourself.

Goodluck chap!

Been looking around and how does this sound...

2 x Apec breaking front disc's = £48
2 x EBC Ultimax front pads = £26
2 x EBC Ultimax rear pads = £21

and leave the rear disc's as I don't think they are too worn?

Darren

What type of rewind tool would I need, and are the pistons on the rear calipers the same as the stilo? Reason I ask is that my dad needs new pads in his stilo too so wanna get one so I can replace them for him too.

Cheers

Fiat Marea Weekend 2.0 20v HLX 147 83k and so far so good!

the rewind tools are generally universal so if you get one for yours robin it should also be the same for the stilo

In the end I went for a set of these all round http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300406381728&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

and am just changing the front pads as they have a lip and the rears are fine so I got these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110446020407&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_npmv%3D3%26_trksid%3Dp3910.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3D110446020407%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

read a few reviews on the discs and semms very good for the price.
The ones from shop4parts were standard but I forgot to +vat so ended up being almost £80!

hopefully these will be good and once fitted (hopefully this weekend) I will write my views on how the perform :)
