Re: Re: anyone had problems with their tappetts?

sorry it's a 1.4 sx
1998
with
55,000 on the clock.

Re: Re: Re: anyone had problems with their tappetts?

Ahhh...

That will most likely be blocked oil feed to the camshaft.

Re: Re: Re: Re: anyone had problems with their tappetts?

how bad is that, i've never really had any expirience with hydraulic tappets, best i've done is a 998 mini,
and clues how bad a prob that is,
the car still ran fine just had a really loud clicking.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: anyone had problems with their tappetts?

Quite bad. Its not the tappets.

Whats probably happened is the oil feed has blocked up and the cam has had no oil so has worn the lobe and the follower.

Best get the cam cover off and see which one looks like its been sandpapered.

I have been getting a loud ticking noise you can hardly hear it with the bonnet down but when it's up you can't hear it cause the engine drowns out the noise. If it is the same problem should this be covered under warranty?

No, the 1.4 is a different design to the other engines and is the only one to suffer that particular issue.

The 1.6 is a tappity engine. If you can't hear it with the bonnet down then its fine.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: anyone had problems with their tappetts?

sorry i am tired i can hear it clear as day when the bonnet is down but when it is up you can't hear it cause of the sound of the engine ( i think that makes sense lol Sorry Tom

Does it get worse when the engine is hot or cold?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: anyone had problems with their tappetts?

Ignore it :) As I said, the 1.6 is rattly.

What oil do you use?

Fiat dealer? If it gets louder when the engine is hot, worry. Otherwise ignore it.

I own a '98 1.4SX brava with around 55000 on the clock also.. I had this problem occur just about 18 months ago. Didnt help the fact I didnt change the oil often enough.. I took it to my local garage, and they quoted me us around £1000. But ended up buying new parts and got a mate to fix it instead.

Ended up gettin new Cam shaft, rocker arms, tappets etc... cost around £500 instead. The problem occured again only to find that my mate hadnt quite used the correct bolts. But took it to another garage, and fixed the problem my mate started for around £100.

Dont know if you will NEED to buy all that stuff, but thats teh route I took at the time. Car runs fine now though.

would the tappety sound on the 1.6 be found on the 1.8n too? that sounds like what my car has been suffering from.

cheers

Alasdair.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: anyone had problems with their t

lol well it's not the tappets it the whole damn engine,
i was told from fiat to be careful if you have a 1.4 that it's becoming more common,
low oil pressure meaning none is getting to the tappetts and cam, it's cheaper to replace the engine than bother repairing.
thought i'd let you know
