Bought a marea 125 diesel whilst i save up to fix my bravo and it has developed a chattering noise from the engine.I removed the auxilliary belt and that damping bottom pulley and the chattering is still there. With the wheel off and the inner wing off its really loud.So i then removed the cam belt and checked all the rollers and found the tentioner a bit notchy so i replaced it with the modified metal one.Restarted it and its still there,it sounds like it is coming from the oil pump. Are they chain or gear driven????and has anyone else had a similar rattle as i dont want to replace the pump at 250 quid plus 4-5 hours work if its not.Give me some ideas chaps......

Check the driven pulley, the one on the crankshaft for the aux belt. It is vulcanised and the rubber comes off after 100 000km so it starts to hit on metal.
The other thing is to check the valve distances from the cam, the TD and JTD dont have self adjustable valves.

No, i ran it with that off,and the chatter is still there,it sounds like the oil pump is noisy but i have never heard of that before.I took the pressure let off valve out and checked that and it all seems okay, but the noise is really loud and you cant hear it from up top but can hear it really loud from the o/s wing...

Assuming you mean use a feeler guage and check the gaps between the cam and the buckets.Does that mean there shimmed and if so where do you find the inlet and exhaust settings. Also the noise is not there from cold at all, until the engine is around 70-80 degrees, which i would have thought it would be there all the while if it were shims. Also it goes when you alter the revs to 2k,only does it on idle..........
