Hi Guys, do any of you guys have a Private plate? I have on my 500, its the first time ive ever had a private plate and the first car ive had it on, if i do change my car how do i go about switching the plates back? and do you know how long it takes, is it a quick process? do i have to apply via forms? or can it be done on phone or online? and also wondering what fiat 500's you have or have owned? what was your favorite model and why?
i currently have a colour therapy I have an appointment with fiat saturday to discuss a possible upgrade, and possible a year newer car to a 15 plate
so the higher spec cars are? The Lounge? the C? im not really a fan of a cloth soft top, what are your experinces of the convertable? and then theres obvioulsy the Abarth, i can get a 14 plate (Same age as my current car) with about 5k more mileage, would anyone consider that? for the same money as a 15 plate Lounge with less than 1k on the clock, my current car has 9k
sorry for all the questions, just interested in other fiat owners views and experinces.
Thanks in advance for replys

Concerning private plates or cherished numbers as DVLA call them, I've had one since 2001 and it's now on it's fourth car. Really quite a simple thing to get changed over through DVLA, pay the transfer fee to put on the donor car. The previous vehicle the private plate was on, usually, has the original vehicle registration mark (VRM) reassigned back to the vehicle. This has happened each and every time I've transferred my plate.

So, if you buy a car that has a cherished number already on it and you then decide to sell that vehicle but want to keep the plate, your options are, have the cherished number placed on retention, costs £25 last time I looked. The car that you now want to sell, DVLA give the car back its orginal VRM. That then leaves you free to go buy another car later and put the plate you have on retention, on the new vehicle, subject to the published transfer fee.

I had a private plate on my 500 TA lounge since new, it is my first and only private plate.
After I found out my car was being written off last month I went onto the DVLA online portal and was able to transfer the plate off the car, it took about 5 minutes online and I paid £80ish to do so. I was immediately emailed a certificate to get new plates with the replacement reg number on and less 36 hours later I had a new V5 for the car with the replacement reg number and a couple of days later I got the private plates holding documentation. It was very impressed with how quickly it was done :)
I'm going to get my private plate out onto the new car when it arrives, apparently that's all done online too.

I've just switched the plate off my old punto, and over the years age transferred plates many times. Used to be lovely and easy when you had the old regional dvla offices.

Just to clarify the DVLA keep the original plate for your car on the system now so that it will always be the original that goes back on when you transfer again.

To transfer from one car to another you cannot do this online. You have to send both V5c forms and the V317 off to the dvla with payment in cheque or postal order.

It costs £80. You shouldn't sell the old car until you have changed the plate so if buying a car get it transferred over before you pick up the new one up and and trade the new one or sell it. You can also get the dealer to foot the bill for the number plates.

If you transfer it off the car and put it on retention it cost £80 and as stated above they send you the retention forms.
If you then want to put it back on another car you'll pay out another £80 to transfer it again.

Thanks guys, you've all been a great help, don't sound half as complicated as I was led to believe! I started wondering if a dealer would be put off that I had plates to sort out first if I go ahead and change the car.
Once again, thank you

Hi again guys, it was very easy to do on line Flo Jo, just as you said!
I was able to take the plates off instantly! got the log book in 3 days, and the retention paperwork in 4! very impressed with the DVLA!! and yep you can now put them on a veichle online now too! so much quicker!!

This does lead me to another question ?
I got the new car saturday, do i have to wait till I get the new Log book to put the plates on the new one? I do obvioulsy have the tear off part the dealer gave me at the mo, so wondered if i can do it straight away or if its best or of i have to wait to get the actual Log book back in my name?
thanks for anymore replies

I have to admit, I haven't swapped my cherished number over online at all to date. Last time was through a now closed DVLA office. What happened there was, they just gave you the paperwork with the authority to go and change the plates that day. I'm assuming here, that if you've done it online, it will be there in the terms and conditions of the sale/transfer exactly when you should change over the plates and I would have thought it would be ok to do it now, but you'll need to check, don't just take my word for it. Also, might be worth just carrying any documentation around with you from DVLA for a couple of weeks just in case the rozzers query it, though they probably won't bother unless it plays up with ANPR.

It takes up to 5 days for the DVLA website to update with changes of vehicle details, but worth just having a look on this link to see whether or not your vehicle details have been updated:

https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

Don't forget to inform your insurer asap and if the vehicle is under any form of warranty with Fiat, let them know too so they can update their records. Also, might be worth letting the ISR know too:

If you have received the transfer certificate, which if done on line should be instantaneous, then that's all you need to get your number plates made up and swapped over.

Why not give the dealer a call and ask if they can register the car with your plate and put the new plates on for you before you collect? It will save you are job :)

Just a note you only ay£80 for one years retention and that includes the cost of putting your CP onto your new car.

Mine is currently on retention and I think it is for 10 years.

Hi Flo Jo, I picked the car up yesterday, so too late lol

I paid £80 too, i did read that it was for a year, but on my certificate it says 2026 so yep 10 years here too

I got the Email with the certificate number straight away like you said, then got the post version 4days later

I have the tear off part of the log book, for the new car but obviusly as i only got the car yesterday havnt had the full log book back in my name yet, looks like the dealer only sent it off friday so thats why i wonderd if i have to get that back before making a further change.
I do have the plates all ready to go on.

As long as the transfer certificate states the registration of the car that you are swapping your number, then you are good to go. Don't forget to let your insurance company know and any finance company if you are lease purchasing.

The new DVLA on line system works very well. Removing cherished plate gives you a replacement Reg No. within seconds, the new Reg. Doc . received within the working week and Retention Cert the same. £80 fee. I remember having to visit my local DVLA office and stand in a queue and it took weeks. So a great improvement.

I have a personalised plate or three :)

I have experience of a 2010 500 Sport and a 2008 500 Lounge - the latter being the one we have at the moment.

Transferring a personalised plate off a car involves issuing new standard plates for the car the personalised plate is coming off, which costs $9.20. There is a transfer fee for putting the personalised plate on a car, about $20 from memory.

Of course, that's in addition to the $999 cost of a personalised Euro plate (the manufacturer's logo added to the side of a Euro plate has no extra charge). A standard-size personalised plate (similar to a USA plate; slightly wider and shorter than a Japanese plate) costs $899 (six of any characters), or $799 if you choose three letters and three numbers (order of characters does not matter). www.plates.co.nz

At the plate manufacture stage, you can order a pair of chrome Euro plate surrounds for $40, which I think suits the 500 perfectly. I'd upload a photo, but "image upload failed".

Since New Zealand is on the opposite side of the world to most readers here, this might well be the most helpful post I've ever made, lol :D

The plate system here is deliberately awkward. As you can't have the order that you want with letters, people make all sorts of combinations and obscure/cut letter to make them look like something else which obviously results in a fine from the police.

They could avoid all of the problems by simply adopting a similar system to you guys provided that it's not offensive or vulgar you can have it
