realy liking my marea weekend but want to do something with the main beams and i thought of fitting xenon bulbs but then found i could get xenon hids for not a lot more complete with the balasts , now i have spoken to owners of other cars and some have had problems with there setup because the car had plastic lenses but on the weekend they are glass so i dont envisage any problems with it in that respect,
any help or ideas would be greatfully appreciated

fitted HIDs with ballasts to the dip only on my marea; dramatic improvement but this was a couple of years ago and you can get much brighter H1s now; with modern traffic density its hardly worth having a main beam......

I have HIDs (35watt) on my main beam for a few years now never been a problem, not even at MOT time, now got HIDs (55watt) on the full beams and still passed MOT no probs...
Just do it there better than any bulbs and my HIDs are 8000k look a little blue.
Got stopped for the tinted windows many times, even stopped by VOSA for roadside inspection and lights never mentioned.

i'm the same m8 my marea's main beam is crap i need to get brighter bulbs asap..any idea's lads..

I agree Andy islf and I do....
The standard marea lights are awful; there are other posts on this; 2 types of headlamp were fitted to the marea; one worse than the other; already had the "good" ones on mine so as stated fitted HIDs to the dip and the brightest H1s I could get to the main beam...

PS to Dave who was the unpleasant, unwelcome and unnecessary remark aimed at and which mareas could be legally upgraded to HIDs?

to the person in the quote box, he has been told time and time again to just post the relevant info so people can make up their own minds. by law you need polly lense, headlamp washers and self leveling lights to fit hids. some mareas came with all that so if you have it all you can fit hids and be fully legal in the uk :)

egal stuff for uk

Aftermarket HID headlamps

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "HID is banned in the after market" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require HID in the after market to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.
In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

ok thanks for that Dave
so if i fit the hid kit and align the beams and they pass the mot and not having to undertake an inspection then i should be ok? or will i need to supply some tea and biscuits to ease the way ?

depends on the tester most only worry about beam pattern so as long as you have pollies they will pass them with no levelers or washers. If you also have the levelers and washers then no reason any tester should fail it

hi dave my w/ender 110 sx 2001 jtd has lev adjust on it but no washers etc if i did get the hids would mine be passable m.o.t wise? As i'm not spending out on something that is a waste of cash thing is tho i/we marea owners deffo need to upgrade our lighting it's dangerous at times etc..

Not that I condone breaking the law, but you can fit HIDs and if the MOT testers fail it, then simply disconnect the HIDs and put normal bulbs back in for the MOT, most are as they say "Plug And Play".

I've never had any probs with my HIDs don't see why anybody else would ??
Like you say standard Marea lights are crap, probably the crapest I've ever seen, but once HIDs are installed it's a vast difference.

you have any more details there dave of the rat sport washer kits? i would have thought that a t junction and some aquarium hose from a pet shop and then a pair of window screen washer jets would do it for a lot less but if the rat sport kit is cheap then that would seal it for me
the home brew kit would be about a tenner or less with the jets from a scrap yard and would be fitted in less than an hour the only hard would be securing the washer jets into the front bumper in the correct placeall the plumbing is easy stuff and you dont need any extra switches or pumps etc would be great little Saturday morning filler
