Technical Another go at starting

Trying to narrow my diagnosis.
ELX115 1.9JTD
Car won't fire at all but cranks.
Left battery on trickle overnight. Very fully charged.

This morning cranked and engine fired for 5 seconds, held, then juddered and finally died. Tried again, didn't catch at all:bang:

RPM sensor done last July/New battery last week

Does anyone have a standard sequence for tests in this circumstance? I'm not a mechanic, but will always have a go if I feel it's within my grasp.

What was the cure?

New battery – a good one like a Varta.

4 x gloplugs

Hums like a dream again. So the gloplugs should be replaced if the display is flashing. I needed all four and it was cold.
