Need more info Andy..what was it in for?

Had it booked in last Friday (28/01) for a diag as the EML light was on,left it with them for a few hours.
Went back & Chick said he believed the Lambda's (02 sencors) were F****d & could I book it in again some time for them to do more tests on, so I booked it for thursday (03/02) as it would give them more time & I don't strat untill after 4pm on a thrusday.

Again left it with them, about 1hr before I needed to leave EK I started walking back up to the Garage & after about 20mins they phoned me to say that the cooling fan didn't work (biggest load of ******** ever) so the enigne had overheated & blown the HG (again more ********). Got up there & spoke to Chick (Garage owner) & he baiscally repeated evrything the woman on the phone had said.
He said that the fan was drawing too much current & blowing the fuse (again yet more ********).

He had done an etsimate of around £2k to do the HG & everything that went with it, I told him that if was the HG I have a brand new one here at home along with the Head bolts & gasket sealent, at which point he tore up his estimate.

I didn't notice anything was wrong with the car untill I came to the first mini roundabout, as I went to stop the enigne wanted to stall, which normally it doesn't, managed to get it home, not being able to go above 65mph partly because of the engine & partly because of a head on wind.
My Step- dad & I have checked to see if there was oil in the expansion tank, there isn't, & checked to see if there was water in the oil, again there isn't.

Why drive it out if it was on 2 cylinders?

Because I didn't know at first James that is was only firing on 2 cyclinders & I needed to get home, to get changed for work.

As I've said to you mate, I've had no problems with Chick or CM Garage since I started using them about a year and a half ago or so. They've been brand new start to finish and compared to Arnold Clark, they've been nothing but amazing in comparison. I'm not saying that you've got the wrong end of the stick nor that Chick and his colleagues haven't eff'd up in some way, but my experience with them counts a lot to me given how many times they've helped me out.

If you've had a bad experience with them, I'd leave it at that and go elsewhere as I did with AC. As I said in another thread, good garages are like gold dust. Until CM put a foot wrong with me, I'll carry on using them. I've got back ups if they do feck up :)

Fair enough Rob.
Unfortunatley I've heard bad things from a friend who used to be a Taxi driver in EK.

Andi, he told you ages ago your head gasket is gone. I was there when he told you last time.

If the fan is not working, then the chances of a HG going is very likly.

Ming

Ming he's talking ********.
1) If the HG had gone the engine would be steaming like a Kettle, which is isn't
2) The Fan does work, as David found out that the fuse tray is back to front, so the fuse I was looking for wasn't where it should be.
David did a temp bodge ivolving a normal 30A fuse, a Maxi Connector & some wiring, the fan worked fine after that.
I then bought a 30A Maxi Fuse & the fan always kicks in when the engine gets hot.
3) If the HG had gone there would be a thin film of oil in the Expansion Tank, which there isn't & water in the oil, again there isn't.

The guy I knwo who used to be a Taxi driver in EK, his brother works as a mechanic for Parks of Hamilton & has said that if ever we needed to borrow a handheld diagnostic machine, to just head to his house in EK.

Why don;t you get a compression test done to confirm ? And No HG gone doesn't automatically means steaming like a kettle.

And why don;t you run the car up to temp and see ifthe fan is still working? I believe when david done the work it was a good few months back.

Ming

my HG went on the 1.1 and i suffered non of them problems. oil was fine water was fine without a film. just silly compression ratios and water dissapearing every few months. eventually it died...

is it running smoothly with the new ht's then?

Aye when David had a look at my Sei, it was running fine, as I siad he got the fan working.
Tested it with a 12v battery, some wire & crocadile clips. Fan worked fine & as I said he did a temp bodge to make the fan work untill I got a 30A Maxi Fuse. Replaced the fuse & fan has wroked fine ever since.

Right car's not loosing water, topped it up on Monday to the max, then had to top it up Thursday after it had cooled down, as it was just below the min mark on the tank.

Need new HT Leads as getting no spark at the plug end on the 2 middle cyclinders, but all spark at the coil.
Thanks to Mark for talking me through what to do.

new ht set needed then and keep the other two working ones as spares for the future.

doesnt that mean its lost water?????

eh? why is it everytime you describe a problem more details appear afterwards?

how long has it been knocking under the rocker cover?

is it losing water or not?

list all the symptoms, leave nothing out.

First heard the knocking in November.
Took it to TJhonstone in Troon, he said he couldn't find anything.

is it losing water or not?

Not that I can see, as I said topped up last monday- drove the car Tuesday & Wednesday to work & back.
Engine was only rough on cold start as I explained over the phone, but holding the throttle open for approx 30 seconds sorted that out.

list all the symptoms, leave nothing out.

OK:
1) Engine is still mis- firing.
2) Below 2500RPM the engine is very rough & shakes
3) Above 2500RPM the engine seems ok
4) 2nd Plug in from the Expansion Tank had oil on the thread. but NO Oil on the Electrode
5) I've no idea what the Electorde Gap is, as I don't know where I put my feeler gauages are

Plugs were changed early September, approx 1 week before the MOT. Plugs used are NGK- BKR5EZ & were gapped correctly at the time of fitting (when I last used my feeler gauges).
I have put 4 brand new HT leads on, which has made little or no difference.
We have tryed swapping the leads about at the coil- no change.
