I have a 2017 Panda "Pop" 1.2litre, bought it from its 2nd owner at a very good price about 4 weeks ago, with 24k on the clock. It has a fault with the rear right passenger door, won't unlock from central locking, won't stay unlocked if you let yourself out from the inside. The inside handle goes back to the lock position. The last owner knew, forgot to tell me during road test so offered £50 off when the sale was completed a few days later.

Before selling it, the owner took it for MOT (late March) and at the same garage, had it serviced (early April). Just before he arrived to collected it, the garage noticed and advised him of the fault. I took the car back to have it assessed properly, fixed if immediately possible and if not, quoted for. The garage had a fancy sales forecourt attached, one of seven local dealerships owned by the group. A big enterprise, I would say. I wanted to have an idea of what the place was like, it was the last owner's preferred garage.

They quoted an assessment cost £45. I accepted, thinking that it was dearer than most. Alas, it needs a new latch and they quoted what you'd expect for a higher-end place, £240 all in. I declined.

I mentioned to them that it should have been an MOT fail. They advised that the MOT and the service were 2 weeks apart and the fault had developed since the MOT -- I gave them the benefit of the doubt. But then they said, for that fault, it wouldn't have been a fail anyway. They told me this on the phone. They doubled-down on it when I asked them again in person. I may have it on an email from them somewhere. Anyway, it doesn't take a half-minute to read the MOT information on the Govt.'s website, here it is:

Driver and passenger doors must open from the outside using the relevant control [Mic drop].

I've got the door panel off myself before going to the garage, but decided against my own continued inspection, that I'd have a professional to check and resolve -- they know the vehicle better than I do, they spotted the fault. But the panel is off, I'm halfway to fixing it. So, two questions:

Is it easy to get to the latch and disengage from the central locking, to replace it? (I'll start a new thread in a more relevant section soon.)

And whaddaya think of the garage? I'm not going to stink up their online reviews (though sorely tempted) nor am I inclined to get back in touch with them, ever.

I dont think it's an MOT fail if the locks dont stay locked. Pretty sure the only thing the door needs to do is open form the inside and stay closed when shut.

It was a thread on this forum that clued me in, that it was an MOT fail.

I'm making too much of it, as I know I'm prone to doing, but if they'd just said, yes, it would have been a fail if present at the time of MOT but the fault developed later, I would be more inclined to believe. It is the unnecessary, incorrect statement, that it would have passed with that fault, that bugs me.

If it wont unlock, then how do you open it?, is it just the central locking playing up

I think it may be that they should work as intended by the manufacturer? My boy's Punto failed last year because the hatch could only be opened by leaning over the back seat and tripping it manually from the inside. MOT rules seem to have changed quite a lot over the last few years and I really don't know what's included now and what's not.

The "grey area" is the opinion of the tester;). Inspite of being one many years ago I do notice some testers have a pet hate or shall we say "specialist subject":ROFLMAO:

Howdo.

I started typing this before many replies, so I may be repeating what others have said.

On the Panda Mk3, the "neutral" position of the handle is unlocked. If you push the handle into the door, it locks the door. The faulty handle allows you out, because you pull the handle from locked, through the unlocked position, to the opened position, but always springs back to the locked position (instead of neutral unlocked) when released.

I inspected it as best as I could yesterday with the interior door panel removed. It looks like one single unit that I can easily get out with a screwdriver. I found loads of detail Friday night about the part and availability, but I'm not at that computer to check my browsing history.

I believe it would be an MOT fail in is current state because that's what the MOT guidance page says on govt website. I've linked to it in earlier posts.

Pet hate? Yes, one place I used to frequent absolutely hated brake lines which had been coated with copper grease. I was a well known face and would drop by from time to time to chat with one of the testers who was a friend. I was standing beside the ramp on one occasion when he showed me what he objected to. "Just look at that" said he, "How am I supposed to see whether that pipe is corroded or not"?

Cannot remember where I've seen the Meat andDoria parts before 🤔

Don't think it was Shop4parts
Yes, First time I placed an order with S4p and they supplied "Original Birth" branded stuff - I remember the front metal water pipe was one - I felt very nervous. I needn't have worried though as it's still giving good service on Becky (must have been fitted around 2018?) Having had other stuff from them with this name I can say it's good stuff. Meat and Doria though? sounds like something you'd find in a dodgy Kebab? Never seen that brand advertised on S4p or anywhere else. These days though you can't necessarily trust even big names because sometimes they are just a brand name which has been sold on. This is one of the reasons I like buying from my local trade factors, if they start selling sub standard items they very quickly get found out by the local garages and the word soon spreads.

Curiosity made me ask the internet: Meat and Doria is a merger between M.E.A.T. (founded 1945) and D.O.R.I.A. (founded 1985). But also, doria is a Japanese-European fusion dish (yōshoku) of cooked white rice and cheese sauce in a shallow dish, grilled until crispy on top (like a gratin) and topped with fried meat and veg. So, you get a lot of recipes when you search meat doria, and more car parts when you search Meat and Doria.

I'm hungry now.

There is probably only one manufacturer of this, supplying OE and aftermarket, as copying it is expensive, with low volume sales.
Autodoc showing as out of stock, but at least it is not urgent, just annoying.

If mine, I'd be inclined to remove it and see if there's anything obvious causing the issue, that might be repairable. Otherwise, use the 'notify me' option on Autodoc, or continue searching.

Don't rely on the notify me though, it might be a little late, or not work at all. Over a year ago, I asked a question about a part, and got a reply yesterday.

I don't like autodoc. Had a poor experience once. All products on site clearly labelled LHS and RHS except the part I needed (wing mirror). Got supplied a driver-on-the-left part. No way of knowing until fitted, and of course, once fitted, would not accept back. Also, unimpressed with how every online part retailer I've found is owned by autodoc, they're now a monopoly.

Very few aftermarket mirrors will fit RHD vehicles, unless the car is Japanese or Korean, where their own market is RHD. Even though the change of angle is slight, the engineering cost is not deemed worth it. Only ever buy aftermarket mirrors if the same brand lists both RHD and LHD.
Having said that, I fitted the large (post 2010) mirrors to my 2006 Panda. Both glasses have to be adjusted fully outwards, and I still see more car than ideal, but the overall larger view does compensate. But I knew they'd be like that before purchase. Keep meaning to search out some used genuine ones, as slightly more plentiful these days.
Autodoc do seem to have many other sites, with usually higher prices, but they will often list stuff not available elsewhere. The usual week delivery time is not good if needed now, but otherwise I've not had any issues. Need to ensure whatever you're buying is shown as 'in stock', as ordering out of stock items will often bring a cheaper alternative.
Needed a new tailgate latch for the Fabia. Quite a complex thing, with bits of metal and plastic, a switch embedded inside, and the release motor. Unlikely for many companies to copy it, so likely all the same. Got a 'cheap' one, inside the box, it was inside a bag covered in logos of one of the more expensive options. Win. From delivery to fitted and working, 20 minutes, car now again knows when boot is open.

Change that door lock right now!!!!! Its a fairly common issue. Once it wont open its altogther more serious! £245 is par for the course. DONT buy cheap locks from eBay they are universally a waste of money. A Fiat part fitted with by a Fiat garage carries a parts and labour warranty. My experience with a Seat lock, was this is the better option having fitted 3 useless chap parts including one from GSF that was unsuitable, and they were the worst customer service I have had for a while. It was not easy to get my money back. Proper lock fitted by the garage worked straight away and resolved lots of associated issues. (drivers locks being handed and controlling other functions)
