Also, arc, run the engine and put your hand on the exshaust... is there black bits coming out? When the super 4 was in, this was smoking black stuff..

no black stuff, no smoke or crap of any sort out the exhaust - blocked exhaust seems to fit.

could unburnt fuel being dumped in the cat block it, or would it just stop it working well?

there is black stuff, ive just reved it and had some paper of the tailpipe. big black splat on the paper. liquid coming out too, smell like fuel.

Have you had a diagnostic?

Think it maye time to steal money and get it looked at proper, my mate was trying to sell on his car and he thought it needed a gearbox and bougt one only to find out it was the clutch at fault.

Best get it read and then go from there, think of all the days it hasn't run properly!

Good man, can't help but think it will be some sensor or something silly, usual Fiat tho'!

Good Luck

Reading all the posts again, the valve sticking or even a bit missing would sound right, but you wouldn't even get a compression of 135. So it might be timing, but its unusual unless the water pump has gone and allowed a jump.

I'll sleep on it and have a think, the vino is slowing an already slow brain down a bit.

another thing that seemed odd, it still seems to loosing coolant despite tests showing the head gasket is fine, and is it normal for the engine to want to spit all the water out the expansion tank once its heated up? ie, its fine and then all of a sudden, loads of water comes out - mechanic seemed slightly concerned by that.. but i thought it was normal.

you say about the water pump going, would that be totally dead if it had gone and not be pumping water. or can they go a bit?

Ah, I didn't catch the bit about wanting to spit the water out.

It all makes perfect sense now.

Its the head gasket.

Its gone between two cylinders, so you get the compression reading, but you also get the blow back as one cylinder is firing when tother is inhaling.

Its head off time.

if that had happened, wouldnt the compression be lower on two of the cylinders tho? when the gasket goes like that, is likely to need skimming etc?

No, what happens is that the ajoining cylinders pump the other one up, if that makes sense.

If you have been running it like that, then a definite yes. Of course you do get extra performance with a skim.

thats what i wasnt sure about tho, if its leaking from say no4 to no3.. then the compression no3 and no4 would be lower than no2 or no1. wouldnt no3 and no4 be the same compression as the seal between them has gone?

sorry if sounding daft here, im trying to learn whats gone on!

When you are testing the compression in one cylinder the others are still compressing, even though you aren't measuring them. If the guage you are using is very accurate you can sometimes notice that some cylinders are pumping at double the rate of others. So, if its no 3 and no 4, frinstance, then when measuring number 3, number 4 will be contributing too, and vice versa.

Hope this helps

ok, thats making sense - but the water isnt, if its gone between two cylinders why is it pressurising the cooling system - are there water channels between each cylinder, if so - wouldnt this mean there were hydrocarbons in the water, but a chemical test of the water showed it was clean.

ive always thought the headgasket was leaking on this car, but have been told by 3 mechanics now that its not. I'd never heard of this chemical testing thingy, but it did seem to make sense.

The water pressurising worried me too. It keeps sounding more and more like a head gasket problem. The bottom line is, taking the head off is no big deal, and a new gasket, assuming all else is well in there, will be insurance for the future.

RE: pressurising

Does your heater still work?

Possibly airlock somewhere also?

When the engine is running for a few mins is the main hose going through the bulkhead warm?

i see your point rallycinq :)

liam, heater works and that pipe does still get warm. the water coming out isnt a real concern at the mo, the lack of power is!
