I've got a 2.4 JTD and I'm very happy with it. The torque is something else and with a remap it'll snap your spine everytime you put your foot down :)

I'd recommend getting a Q2 diff fitted with clutch change as it vastly improves traction and cornering.

Very comfy motor too, I wish mine wasn't sitting in my cousins barn just now :(

The 156 2.4

Only had minor niggles with it, nothing major ... like any other car.

The 156 is a cracking car.

If your in the market for one then try for an early 2003 model, facelift interior, colour coded bump strips/mirrors with the original front/rear panels.

As matt says, get a re-map and a Q2(LSD)!!! I don't think the later 20v's can take the Q2.

Check suspension for creaks and knocks as these problems are common on a 156.

Enjoy :)

The 20v's can't fit the Q2 as MG says. Think it might be only the 5-speed diesels.

And he's spot on with old shape body, facelift interior...best combination.

My 156 is for sale if I'm offered the right price, not really bothered about selling it but I don't use it either. Just good to have a car about :)

I think the 20v 2.4 uses a whole new gearbox to all the others. My 1.9JTDm (6 speed) has the Q2 standard.

Don't get me wrong, the facelift looks nice but it needs to be the right colour with the right wheels and suspension. The original shape with the coloured strips/mirrors can pull off any colour with any half decent alloys. The rear looks a bit awkward on the facelift too.

Cheers for the input guys its definately lookin like the one i'll go for at the mo. How come you say fit a Q2 LSD? I'll only be lookin to spend £1500 max, so an 03 is probably a bit out of the question was looking for an earlier one.

I've explained up there about the Q2.

The newer 20v has a GM gearbox which is incompatible iirc. I was talking about the 2.4 5 speed, not the 1.9s ;)

Here's an arse shot of mine, can't find any recent shots of the front lol

Hey chap,

I don't know about the 156 but I have the maera weekend 2.4jtd, 10v

It is torquey but could do with a re-map for a bit more 'poke' due to the weight of the car (only has 130bhp standard on the marea)

Never had a problem with the engine, it has never not started.

I've had the cambelt changed a clutch replaced at a good price of £450 for the lot.

glow plugs were about £70 to do at a garage but these only need to be done once every 5-10 years I believe.

All in all a good engine and if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the 156, then a marea would be quite a good choice.

id like a marea 2.4 JTD but i can't find one anywhere! And matt you didn't really explain about the Q2, what advantages does it have over not having one? plus how much or how easy are these to fit?

More traction and improved cornering ... it says up there :S

It's to do with putting the power to the wheel with most grip as opposed to the wheel with least grip (standard setup).

You should get one fitted when you replace the clutch, then you won't need to pay extra for labour.

No idea, although I was talking to Scotty a while back about the possibilties of fitting them to the Brava 1.9JTD and it looked favourable.
