Ben, I don't know if this is possible, but it could be useful to have a confirmation dialog box pop up if anyone tries to post to an old but still open thread, where the last post is more than (say) 6 months ago.
Just lately I've noticed several historic thread revivals where the new post is responding to a question raised many years ago. This generally is done by new members who don't check the date of the last post before adding to the thread.
Sometimes it can be useful to add to a historic thread, but usually it isn't, and a simple dialog box reminding the user that they're reopening an old thread and asking if they'd like to continue, start a new thread, or cancel could be helpful.
