The aircon on my 1.4 makes a loud clunk as it engages on startup. No problems otherwise with its performance. Anyone else experienced this?

That my friend is the sound of the Compressor working, try switching the air con on/off and you can then here the compressor clicking accordingly.
Every car does this, when i switch mine on in very hot weather the coolings fans kick in for about 1 min then go off.
