Hello

A piece of AC advice please….

Since taking custody of my X250 2008 Ducato 3.0 in November the manual air-con hasn’t worked -The AC switch had voltage in and out (light on) & there was a historic fault code for the low pressure switch open circuit ground which I (correctly) guessed that the system was under pressured.

Local mobile AC engineer came out to perform a quick diagnostic, filling the system with Nitrogen and the AC pump clicked in and there was a modicum of cool air - he then advised the system was not holding pressure so added a uv dye and more nitrogen with view to returning with a uv light once I’d run it a short while( he didn’t have time there and then).
In the meantime I obtained a uv light but I could not find a leak in what I can see of the system - So as I had not seen any UV dye, just to check the uv light was suitable I checked the Low Pressure (LP) port where the dye had been inserted.
Bear in mind that at this point when selecting the AC, the compressor was still clicking in.

When I unscrewed the LP cap it felt tight and there was a small escape of gas - I suspect the schrader valve is tired/faulty. However there was only a small trace of yellow uv dye. The AC pump now no longer clicks in, so we are back to a too low pressure.
For note the HP port did not expel anything when removing the cap.

However, I wish to belts and braces my diagnosis by checking the evaporator for leaks, which goes without saying, is buried deep deep in the dash.
I’ve got a portable endoscope and the UV light.

My question to those in the know is , whereabouts is there in the dash with minimal dismantling that would allow access to shine the uv light upon the evaporator whilst viewing it with the endoscope…..

To answer my own question - it’s an impossibility to see the full evaporator without dismantling, so I plumped for a condenser change as it was crusty and there was one section that had threads of UV dye seeping - it was a good call as I now have working AC.

Well - that didn’t last. Less than 2 weeks. Strong smell of thinners (aka R134a refrigerant) from vents, then AC no longer cool whilst away in the camper last week.

Based on the fact that the smell was so strong and the air intake was on recirculate at the time, I’m returning to my original quest to gain access to the evaporator and the pipes. The system still has dye in so hopefully I’ll be able to locate the leak - has anyone removed the dash on an x250 to gain access to the ventilation system casings? If so, any tips for this job? ie hidden fixings or you have pictures from doing the job etc
