The best way to find out the problem is to get a diagnosis from a Fiat dealer, they have to reset the fault anyway.
Nige, I also may be talking bull, but.... An airbag warning is an MOT failure and as we all know an MOT does not prove the car is roadworthy once you leave the garage where it was done. So a clever insurance assessor may say that the car was not roadworthy/maintained to a suitable standard and therefore invalidate the insurance.
I have same problem with my Marea Weekend 1.9 JTD it seems a common fault! I have been told I need a new E.C.U Mine is a single airbag in drivers steering wheel. I don't know where the e c u is? I have been offered one at a
very good discount but part number is 4681140 whereas number I am told by Fiat is 4681139 does the one digit matter does anyone know?
If you change the ECU you will have to disable the immobiliser or get it programmed to accept your keys. About £200 from codeman.org I would be very wary of an ECU with a different part number.
The passenger side loom is quite often installed with a small resistor to fool the ECU into thinking it is ok. There have been problems with this resistor. I would check that out first.
It may be worth getting a diagnostic to see what the problem is when you get the light reset.
