We think we have got to the bottom of the smell of fumes in my son’s Panda 1.1 Eco. Had the exhaust checked and that seems alright but the garage checked the intake side and a pipe from the cam cover had become detached from the airbox. In the process of putting it back on, it was discovered the gasket/donut that seals the airbox onto the throttle housing was missing.

This would all probably explain the stink of fumes when stationery and spluttering under load. It’s like the choke needs pulling out (if you are old enough to remember those) and it does seem to be using a lot of petrol.

I’ve looked on ePer and I think the part number is 46528828. Would that be correct?

Many thanks.

Can happen by accident

But I would hazard a guess, someone has removed it on purpose to mask a MAP sensor fawling problem, to sell the car

Is the spring on the front of the air box present
Yes, it’s all there. The garage owner said that it might’ve gone missing whenever.

I’ve not had a petrol car in the house for 20+ years, so I had to look the MAP sensor thing up. Sounds possible, the car was owned by an old guy since new and it’s only done 43k miles in 15 years, so short journeys clogging things up are a possibility.

I’ll het hold of a seal and report back 🤞🏻

Got a pleasing message from the garage owner yesterday - he found the seal while he was sweeping up, so I refitted it last night.

With the breather pipe and seal on, we did a L-plate run to sixth form this morning and I’ve continued to work to the other side of Lancaster and driven it home. No fumes at all.
