General Air Conditioning Problem

Hi, could someone please help if possible.

I have a fiat ulysse 2.0 JTD 2003, the problem is that after a while of using the car with the air conditioning unit on, the unit coats itself with ice on the outside, and thus when this melts water goes all over the carpets, can some one please explain whats happening and how i can retify the problem.
