My air con seems to always be warm and comes on and off as it feels, even when it is switched off! Any ideas?

Is it on Auto setting?
If it's warm you probably need the system regassing. Have it checked for splits in the pipes first or you could waste money on refrigerant.

No it comes on by itself even when it is set to '0'. Can I check the pipes myself? If so, where do I find them. Also, how much is a typical re-gas?

you can check the pipes yourself but it is often difficult to identify a leak when the system is no longer leaking because all the freon has escaped.
usually a leak check and refill will set you back £65. not a fortune but you can get the DIY service kits on the internet for less than half that price if you look about. dont assume you definately have a leak, regassing the system is a normal part of a/c maintenance. however assuming you dont have a leak could be a waste of time and money. my advice, dont bother wiht the a/c, it wastes petrol and it isnt that hot in the uk. wind your window down instead.

there is a bloke at Sunderland who tests and gases up for £45 he is the only bloke up here in the yellow pages under Car Air Conditioning he is mobile but dont know how far he will travel

aircon is worse than windows, for ecomony and performance. maybe at 100+mph it would start to sway the other way, but the differecne in drag at lower speeds doesnt have a massive effect.

The drag from open windows would make youre overall MPG lower than the air con on would.
Whatched it being put to the test on discovery channel
