My early 2006 2.8jtd with 137,000k has the air bag failure indicator light on all the time ( except when the ignition is switched on, when it lights up, goes out and comes back on and stays on). I have checked for any wiring under or around the swiveling front seats and there is none, neither is there any wiring near the tensioning for the seat belt. The switch for deactivating the passenger seat airbag works OK ( indicated on dash light, which flashes initially, when in on position before staying on ) although the fitting is very loose. I have had the battery disconnected for 30+ minutes hoping to reset, but no change. The air bag indicator light initially came on and off at irregular intervals over a long time, until finally stayed on. According to the manual this indicated a failure in safety retaining systems. Any ideas what the problem is?

Hi Wray,

Welcome to the forum.

I have owned my 2006 x244 2.8jtd from new. I believe it has only driver's air bag, and seat belt pre-tensioners. Due to the explosive capabilities of the air bag system, I have been reluctant to investigate too closely just from curiosity.

While I agree that there is no wiring under the swivelling front seats, I have to disagree regarding that for the seat belts. You will have to remove the seat belt cover to see it, but there is wiring, and what I believe is a pre-tensioning device in there.

If removing the lower seat belt cover, you will need to remove the seat belt lower fixing bolt, and at the top of the lower section. My covers seemed to lack a lower small screw, but as the covers were adequately retained by the conversion floor, and the screw seemed to be aimed at the seat belt mechanism, I decided against fitting replacement screws.

Your problem will most probably be that one of the installed air bag(s) or pre-tensioners has failed, but that does not exclude a wiring fault. You may be able to determine the particular item by interrogating the air bag computer. This will need appropriate software, plus interface and lead. The software multiecuscan, which runs on a Windows computer is most frequently recommended on forum. The software and necessary accessories may be purchased from the UK company "Gendan", who are also mentioned as being helpful with advice. You may of course wish to look closer to home.

I am attaching a selection from my labelled copies of Fiat eLearn diagrams. You will find similar, and further info here. Scroll down for connector wiring info.

Also see this FF thread.

When working on he air bag and restraint system, you are advised to disconnect the battery negative well before starting work. (Take time off for tea/coffee.)
