You need to measure them using a micrometer. You were probably taught how to use one in school, but if you can't remember, perhaps best to take it to someone who does.

I wonder what percentage of the motoring population owns a micrometer? I certainly don't. Ahmett's link rather ridiculously suggests we should all be regularly checking our brake disc thicknesses....

(Just to be clear I'm saying the link was ridiculous, not Ahmett.)

Seriously though I have no idea to exactly tell how thick my discs should be = )

Pads are easy to see if they are too thin, but the discs no sir!

i think it is suggesting that you get your car serviced regularly, the garage should check disc and pad condition as part of the schedule.
fyi there is a min specified thickness, this may be stamped on the disc and is listed in the specifications

How many garages actually measure discs rather than doing a visual inspection.

many discs have wear indicators built into them, which means only a visual inspection is needed
also if there is a lip or uneven wear this will mean discs gets replaced (or re-skimmed if cost effective)
it is more critcal to check thickness on high end/sports cars as you dont want to end up replacing them too soon

with our cars where the discs are so cheap and often cheaper than the pads it makes sense to change them

generally i would say you get 2 sets of pads out of a disc these days as pads are more abrasive than the old asbestos materials

That sounds about right Rob my local tech said you can get 3 out of your ones but might as well get it done this time when these ones wear out.

I have no comment to make seeing that is the company that pays my pension.;)

Hahaha.
To be honest i really pushed the car this weekend and my brakes werent feeling at their best and an inspection of the brakes you could tell the discs were thinner will take a pic when i can but i doubt you would be able to tell the difference.
