But surely your Stilo has a max speed greater than 25 mph, irrespective of what speed you are actually going to drive it at...

Not when towing, I follow guidelines of equipment I'm using. Yes it probably could yank the 106 along the back roads at 60+, but I've got to concider safety and more importantly my MPG though.

Crazy mixed up world we live in. It's illegal to tow a car on a motorway - and yet, surely, a motorway is THE safest place to be towing?
Everything's going in the same direction, no constant stopping & setting off, no changing direction, no idiots coming up behind, flashing you for showing hazards & then overtaking & trying to squeeze into the gap occupied by the rope.

I don't know where you got this from, but it is legal to tow a vehicle on the motorway.

Most people are under the misconception that it is illegal and indeed when I used to work in the control room at work we would get 999 calls reporting vehicles being towed on the motorway. People were generally surprised to be told that it's fine to do so.

ahh, but it has been ammended a couple of years back:

The only times when you can use your amber flashing light are when you are:

at the scene of an emergency
wanting to let people know you are there
at or near an accident or broken-down vehicle
towing a broken-down vehicle
escorting a very long or wide vehicle (below 25 mph, unless you are in an abnormal load escort vehicle) and have special authority

If you note "Towing", so if its on a flatbed, ambers should not be used... (Take that AA...)
