Hi everybody,

My Brava 1997 1.6sx recently has much smok from exhuast when I push a little on the gas pedal. This week also the car has used double bensin! Sometimes also going like a horse- with a shock- specially when it is very cold. I should say that the weather is freezing theses days in my town in Norway. Then I guess the problem of bensin and shock is because of that. Please, give me any advice specially about smok. Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Kami

Cold should not cause smoke (usually). Fiats run without any problems at -35 C if everything OK with injector. Ofcause it should not ride to top performace while engine is colder than around 20-30 C.

And about smoke? What kind of it? White, bluish-grey, black? Oily-black? If it's black -- it's injector problem, better go to service and check engine and sensors readings with test computer. If white -- check antifreese level, if it's dropping fast -- bad luck, you've got broken gasket between engine block and head... If not -- disregard smoke -- it could be caused by the hundred different reasons which have no relation to engine itself. If bluish grey -- check oil level often. If oil is consumed at rate faster than 1 liter per 1000 km -- you porbably have problem with piston rings -- it means complete engine rehaul :(...

Re: Re: A special problem........................

Thanks Igor! I cheked it out. It is difficlt to say the color but when I push a little it is light brown and a bit more it is black and then sometimes light grey. I noticed a lot of small bits which are black went out from exhaust and when I pushed more on the pedal some black liquid like black water or very soft oil also was droping from exhaust.

It is really like black water. Is not it because of bad condense? Help!

Re: Re: Re: Re: A special problem........................

Brown to black smoke with black bits means too much petrol in cylinders. Usually this happens when oxigen sensor (lambda-sensor) dies. Usually comes with uneven idling and slowed reaction to gas pedal in first stages, ends with impossibility to start car. To check -- disconnect this sensor. Usually connector is located on the back of engine compartment near or in black plastic box on the middle, there should be 4 wires grouped together, usually 2 grey, black, white-black. Grey wires are sensor preheating, black and white-black are sensor wires. Usually grey wires go somewhere straight, and colored go through connector to computer just disconnect this connector when ignition is off. If not, just trace wire from the sensor to connector. (hope you know that oxygen sensor lives in exhaust pipe befor catalisator ;) ) If everything will start to look normal, you'll need to replace sensor. (When sensor is disconnected engine starts to work in "emergency" mode and uses table values instead of oxigen sensor readings). If this does not help -- could be engine temperature sensor or throttle position sensor... Anyway, better use diagnostick computer to determine which exactly. Bad thing about oxigen sensor is that it somtimes gives readings that are in normal range even when completely dead, so computer diagnostic actualy can indicate just if it's connected or not.

Many thanks for much information! I will do that. I hoped it was not from motor or pistion ring..
